Phillies Strike Back After Tough Loss
The Phillies hosted the Guardians at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Cleveland came in riding an 8-2 streak over their last ten games, but they had just lost the night before 1-0 on a Kyle Manzardo home run. Philadelphia sat at 26-26 and needed a win badly. The Guardians' pitching depth has kept them competitive all season, but today Slade Cecconi would face a Phillies lineup led by the powerful bat of Bryce Harper. The Phillies' ace Zack Wheeler took the mound looking to shut down Cleveland's hitters. When the final out was made, Philadelphia had won 3-0. The Guardians couldn't solve Wheeler's stuff, while the Phillies broke through early and never looked back. This was a complete pitching performance against a team that prides itself on strong arms.
Stott's Hit Breaks Open the Game Early
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Phillies struck. Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm were on base with two outs. Bryson Stott stepped up to face Slade Cecconi. The pitcher threw an 89 mile-per-hour cutter right into Stott's wheelhouse. Stott met it perfectly and lined a single through the middle of the field. Harper raced home. Bohm sprinted down the line and crossed the plate right behind him. Suddenly it was 2-0 Phillies. The crowd at Citizens Bank Park erupted. Two runs on one swing changed everything. Cleveland's pitching staff had kept them in so many games this season, but they couldn't escape this early hole. In the sixth inning, Philadelphia added one more when Adolis Garcia walked with bases loaded, scoring Harper again. The Phillies now led 3-0 and total control never wavered.
Wheeler Shuts Down Cleveland from Start to Finish
Zack Wheeler was absolutely brilliant from the moment he took the mound. The Phillies' ace threw six complete innings and allowed just two hits. He struck out six batters and walked one. His fastball looked untouchable. Cleveland's hitters kept swinging and missing. Steven Kwan went 0-for-3. Jose Ramirez went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. Kyle Manzardo struck out three times. The Guardians managed only three hits all game, with Rhys Hoskins and Travis Bazzana getting the only other ones. When the bullpen took over in the seventh, the Guardians still hadn't scored a single run. Orion Kerkering, Brad Keller, and closer Jhoan Duran combined to shut the door completely. No Cleveland runs came home. The final score stayed 3-0 Phillies. Cleveland dropped to 31-24. Philadelphia improved to 27-26 and snapped their losing streak with this dominating performance.
