Springer Strikes First in Toronto
The Toronto Blue Jays hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates at Rogers Centre, looking to keep their winning streak rolling. The Pirates came in riding a tough two-game losing streak, their 26-26 record on the line. They'd lost to the Blue Jays 6-2 the night before, and this game would be their chance to bounce back. Paul Skenes took the mound for Pittsburgh, fresh off his recent success. But the Blue Jays struck immediately. George Springer stepped up in the bottom of the first inning and crushed a 97-mile-per-hour fastball from Skenes deep to left field. The ball rocketed 396 feet and crashed over the wall. The crowd erupted. Toronto led 1-0 before the Pirates could even blink. The game was off and running.
Pirates Claw Back, Then Blue Jays Break It Open
The game stayed tight into the sixth inning. Pittsburgh finally found some magic when Marcell Ozuna ripped a double to right field with two outs. Bryan Reynolds came racing home to tie it 1-1. But Toronto answered right back. Jesus Sánchez doubled to right, scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from third. Ernie Clement followed with a single to left, driving in Pinango. The Blue Jays pushed across three runs in that wild sixth inning. Then in the seventh, Tyler Heineman stepped up and cranked a four-seam fastball into the right-field bleachers. His 391-foot home run made it 5-1 Toronto. The Pirates were running out of time and chances. Their offense just couldn't keep up with Toronto's bats.
Final Score: Blue Jays Finish Strong at 5-2
The Pirates tried one more time in the eighth inning. Another Ozuna double brought a run home off pitcher Yariel Rodríguez. Konnor Griffin also scored on a pickoff error. But it wasn't nearly enough. The Blue Jays' offense had already done all the damage it needed. Patrick Corbin was brilliant on the mound for Toronto, giving up just five hits across six innings. Jeff Hoffman closed it out in the ninth with three strikeouts. Final score: Blue Jays 5, Pirates 2. Toronto improved to 25-27 with this win and kept their winning streak alive at four straight victories. Pittsburgh fell to 26-27 and dropped their third straight loss. The Pirates' pitching staff, even with Skenes on the hill, couldn't contain the Blue Jays' bats.
