How Old Do You Have to Be to Play Fantasy Football? Age Ratings for ESPN, Yahoo, Sleeper & More

How Old Do You Have to Be to Play Fantasy Football? Age Ratings for ESPN, Yahoo, Sleeper & More

Short answer: it depends on the app, not the App Store badge. NFL Fantasy Football's own official rules require every entrant to be 18, even though the app itself is rated 4+. Yahoo Fantasy and Sleeper let you open an account at 13 (Sleeper requires parental consent) but reserve paid contests for adults - 18, rising to 19 or 21 in some states - while DraftKings requires 18 and up depending on the state, and ESPN Fantasy publishes no single minimum age, instead routing anyone under 18 through a parental-permission form. Jump to "Every fantasy football age rating, side by side" below for the full comparison, or "What age can kids play fantasy football?" further down for each platform's own terms.

Quick answer by app

AppAge to play
NFL Fantasy Football (rated 4+)18+, per the app's own official rules
ESPN Fantasy (rated 13+)No single age published; under 18 needs a parent's permission
Yahoo Fantasy (rated 18+)13+ for an account; 18+ for paid contests (19+ in AL/NE, 21+ in AZ/MA)
Sleeper (rated 18+)13+ with parental consent for an account; 18+ for contests (19+ or 21+ in some states)
DraftKings (rated 18+)18+ (19+ in NE/AL; 21+ in AZ, IA, select LA parishes, MA, VA)
LitZone (rated 4+, ours)Built for ages 8–13

There is no single fantasy football age rating. As of August 19, 2026, five of the most widely used fantasy football apps in the US App Store span three of Apple's five rating tiers: NFL Fantasy Football is rated 4+, ESPN Fantasy sits at 13+, and Yahoo Fantasy, Sleeper, and DraftKings are all rated 18+. The bigger surprise for parents is that a store rating is not a minimum age. NFL Fantasy Football carries a 4+ rating while its own official rules require every entrant to be at least eighteen years old at registration. We have added our own app, LitZone, as the first row of the table below so you can see what a listing built for 8-to-13-year-olds looks like beside the five.

What Apple's age ratings actually mean

Apple rebuilt this system recently, which is why many older parenting articles are now wrong. On July 24, 2025 Apple added three new tiers, 13+, 16+, and 18+, retired the old 12+ and 17+ categories (MacRumors), and gave developers until January 31, 2026 to answer the updated rating questionnaire (Apple Developer).

Here is what Apple says an app in each tier is allowed to contain, condensed from its official definitions (Apple Developer):

RatingThe app may contain
4+No objectionable material, but possibly user-generated content, messaging and chat, advertising, and infrequent contests
9+Infrequent profanity or crude humor, horror or fear themes, cartoon or fantasy violence, and loot boxes
13+Social media, frequent profanity, frequent contests, infrequent realistic violence, and infrequent simulated gambling
16+Unrestricted web access, frequent mature or suggestive themes, and frequent medical or treatment information
18+Gambling, frequent simulated gambling, frequent alcohol or drug references, frequent sexual content, and frequent realistic violence

Two rows explain nearly everything about fantasy apps. Frequent contests alone caps an app at 13+, which is exactly where ESPN Fantasy landed, with no gambling descriptor at all. Gambling, or frequent simulated gambling, forces 18+, which is why Yahoo Fantasy, Sleeper, and DraftKings all sit in the top tier.

Notice what a 4+ rating does not rule out. Under Apple's own definitions, a 4+ app can still carry advertising, chat, and user-generated content, so the number alone says little about who can message your child.

Why the fantasy football age rating is not the age limit

A store rating describes content. Eligibility is set separately, in the terms of service, and the two frequently disagree.

The clearest example is the NFL's own app. NFL.com Fantasy's official rules open the game only to persons who are "eighteen (18) years of age or older as of the date of registration" (NFL.com), even though the app is listed at 4+. A ten-year-old can install it in one tap and is not permitted to play it.

  • Sleeper requires users to be "at least 13 years of age and have parental consent (if under the age of 18)," and at least 18 to enter contests, rising to 19 or 21 in some jurisdictions (Sleeper terms of use).
  • DraftKings requires daily fantasy players to be "18+ years of age or older (19+ in NE, AL) (21+ in AZ, IA, LA (select parishes), MA, and VA)" (DraftKings DFS terms).
  • Yahoo allows an account at 13, but its paid fantasy contests require entrants to be "at least 18 years of age (19 if located in AL or NE, or 21 if located in AZ or MA)" (Yahoo paid fantasy terms).
  • ESPN does not publish one current minimum age on an openly readable fantasy page. It does route under-18 signups through a separate form requiring a parent's or guardian's permission and a parent's email address (ESPN registration).

What age can kids play fantasy football?

Thirteen keeps repeating across these platforms, and that is not a coincidence. Operators covered by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act must "obtain verifiable parental consent, with limited exceptions, before collecting personal information online from children" under 13 (Federal Trade Commission). Setting the floor at 13 is the cheapest way for a general-audience app to stay outside COPPA's scope, which is why so many products never built for children share the same floor. Our plain-English parent guide to COPPA covers what that law actually requires.

For an 8-to-13-year-old, that leaves three honest options: run a paper or spreadsheet league at home, own the account yourself and let your child play alongside you, or use a platform built for that age band. What does not work is assuming a 4+ badge means the product was designed with your kid in mind.

Five checks before you hand over the phone

  1. Read the content descriptors under Age Rating, not just the number. "Messaging and chat" and "user-generated content" matter more than the tier.
  2. Search the app's terms of service for the phrase "years of age" and see what number comes back. That is the real age floor.
  3. Ask whether money can enter the app anywhere, including entry fees, wallets, deposits, or player props.
  4. Check who your child can talk to. Open league chat means adults your family has never met can message a kid.
  5. Check what the app is funded by. Four of the five mainstream apps above list advertising as a content descriptor, and that ad inventory is sold against whoever is holding the screen. A subscription app such as LitZone has no ad slot to sell, which is a different set of incentives rather than a virtue.

Purpose-built options exist if you want fantasy without any of that. LitZone is one: built for ages 8 to 13, kids draft real pro football players and must complete Common Core-aligned reading and math challenges to earn upgrades, with no ads, no chat, no comments, and COPPA and FERPA compliance built in. It is on Google Play as well as the App Store, and runs in a browser at play.litzonesports.com. Basketball arrives in October 2026 and baseball in spring 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ESPN Fantasy app age rating really 17+?

No, and it cannot be. Apple retired the 17+ tier in its 2025 overhaul, and as of August 19, 2026 the ESPN Fantasy Sports & More listing shows 13+ with descriptors for frequent contests, advertising, and messaging and chat (Apple App Store). Any article still quoting 17+ is describing the old system.

What age can kids play fantasy football?

It depends on the platform, not on a general rule. NFL.com Fantasy requires 18, DraftKings requires 18 to 21 depending on the state, and Sleeper and Yahoo allow accounts at 13 but restrict paid contests to adults. For children under 13, a home league you run yourself or a platform built for that age group is the workable path.

Why are Sleeper and Yahoo Fantasy rated 18+ if they are fantasy apps?

Because both run real-money contests alongside season-long leagues, and Apple treats gambling as an automatic 18+ trigger. Sleeper's listing also flags frequent profanity or crude humor and user-generated content, which is consistent with its open league chat.

Does a 4+ rating mean an app is safe for a young child?

Not on its own. Apple's 4+ definition still permits advertising, messaging and chat, and user-generated content. NFL Fantasy Football is the clearest case: rated 4+, but off-limits to anyone under 18 by its own rules.

The descriptors are what separate two apps sharing a badge. NFL Fantasy is 4+ with advertising and an 18-and-over rule; LitZone is 4+ with no advertising, chat, or user-generated content descriptor and an audience it actually designs for. Read the descriptors, not the number.

If you have a sports-obsessed 8-to-13-year-old and you would rather they spent that energy on reading and math than on an app built for adults, LitZone was made for exactly that gap. You can see how the leveled reading and math challenges work, and start a 7-day free trial, at litzonesports.com.
