49ers Defense Dominates Panthers 20–9 on Monday Night
The San Francisco 49ers (7–3) traveled to Charlotte to face the Carolina Panthers (6–5) in an important Week 12 game. The 49ers wanted to keep their momentum going behind Christian McCaffrey’s strong play, while the Panthers hoped to stay in the playoff race after Bryce Young’s huge 448-yard game the week before.
First Quarter: Early Mistakes Hurt Carolina
San Francisco scored first with a steady 15-play drive. Christian McCaffrey did most of the work, and Brock Purdy finished the drive by hitting Jauan Jennings for a 12-yard touchdown.
Carolina’s offense struggled with penalties and a stalled drive, but Jaycee Horn briefly gave them life by intercepting a deep pass from Purdy. The Panthers reached the 1-yard line, but Young threw an interception in the end zone, and they came away with nothing. The quarter ended 7–0 in favor of the 49ers.
Second Quarter: Defense Takes Over
Both offenses slowed down in the second quarter. Purdy threw another deep interception to Horn, giving Carolina great field position.
The Panthers finally got on the board with a 25-yard field goal after short runs by Rico Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard. San Francisco answered with a field goal of their own before halftime, thanks to a 25-yard pass from Purdy to George Kittle. The 49ers led 10–3 at the break.
Third Quarter: McCaffrey Takes Control
Christian McCaffrey dominated the third quarter with powerful runs and big catches. His 17-yard burst early in the quarter set the tone.
He later finished a long drive with a 12-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 17–3.
Carolina responded with its best drive of the night. Young connected with rookie Tetairoa McMillan for a 29-yard touchdown. The two-point try failed, making it 17–9.
Fourth Quarter: 49ers Close It Out
San Francisco added another field goal to go up 20–9. McCaffrey continued to control the clock with steady runs.
Carolina’s final comeback chance ended when Young threw his second interception of the game. The 49ers ran out the clock to secure the win.
Game Impact
The 49ers improved to 8–4 and extended their winning streak. McCaffrey looked like his old self, finishing with 89 rushing yards, 53 receiving yards, and a touchdown. The defense came up big with multiple turnovers.
The Panthers fell to 6–6, putting pressure on their playoff hopes. Young struggled with two turnovers, though McMillan’s touchdown was a highlight.
San Francisco will try to build on this win, while Carolina needs to regroup quickly to stay alive in the playoff race.
