A New Era Begins: Trae Young Traded to the Wizards
Trade Details
The Atlanta Hawks have officially traded Trae Young, ending his long run in Atlanta. Young is heading to the Washington Wizards, while the Hawks receive CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert in return.
This move closes a major chapter for Atlanta. Trae Young spent his entire NBA career with the Hawks after being drafted in 2018 (originally by Dallas before a draft-night trade). He became one of the most important players in franchise history and one of the league’s most exciting guards.
Trae Young’s Legacy in Atlanta
Trae Young was a four-time All-Star and the face of the Hawks for years. He led the team in assists and three-pointers and helped bring Atlanta back to relevance. His most famous moment came in the 2021 playoffs, when he led the Hawks past the New York Knicks and all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals.
This season, injuries limited Young’s availability, and Atlanta struggled to find consistency when he returned. The Hawks are 18–21 and ninth in the East, and the front office decided it was time for a change.
Why the Wizards Made the Move
The Wizards are 10–26 and sit near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, but this trade gives them a clear star to build around. Trae Young brings elite scoring and playmaking to a young roster that needed leadership.
Young will help develop players like Alex Sarr, who now has a dangerous pick-and-roll partner, and Tre Johnson, who should get more open three-point shots thanks to Trae’s passing. Washington may still limit Young’s minutes this season, though. They owe a top-8 protected first-round pick to the Knicks, meaning if their pick lands in the top eight, they keep it. If it falls outside that range, it goes to New York. That gives the Wizards a reason to still lose games and focus on the future.
Why the Hawks Decided to Move On
When Trae Young was out with a knee injury, the Hawks played their best basketball of the season. By trading Trae, Atlanta gains flexibility and can play bigger defensive lineups. McCollum gives them steady ball handling and shot creation without the defensive drawbacks of Trae. Kispert is an elite shooter with room to grow and fits well next to bigger, more defensive lineups.
The Hawks are expected to lean into younger players like Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Zaccharie Risacher as they reset.
What Comes Next
Some analysts see this as a win-win. Others think Atlanta didn’t get enough for a franchise star. What’s clear is this: Trae Young’s impact has always been debated, but his talent has never been questioned. Now, he gets a fresh start and the Wizards get a new face of their future.
