Bucky Irving turned Raymond James Stadium into his own long runway Sunday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back sprinted for 170 yards and scored the game’s only touchdown as Tampa Bay blanked the Atlanta Falcons 16-0. The Buccaneers entered at 2-5, trying to restart their NFC South push. Atlanta arrived at 3-4 after a huge win over San Francisco, but its new momentum disappeared under a wave of takeaways and a powerful Tampa Bay ground attack.
The Falcons opened with a promising drive, reaching Tampa Bay territory behind Michael Penix Jr. throws to Jahan Dotson and Kyle Pitts Sr. But Nick Folk missed a 53-yard field goal wide left. That miss gave the Buccaneers a lift, and Irving answered immediately with a 24-yard burst up the middle. Tampa Bay settled for Chase McLaughlin’s 46-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead.
Atlanta’s next few chances became the game’s first major turning point. Linebacker Alex Anzalone intercepted Penix twice in the first quarter, giving Tampa Bay short fields. The Falcons defense stopped one threat in a dramatic way when Irving fumbled at the goal line and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a touchback. Still, McLaughlin added a 34-yard field goal after the second interception, making it 6-0.
Penix and the Falcons could not find their usual rhythm. Anzalone grabbed a third interception early in the second quarter, and Tampa Bay used a long, patient rushing drive to build its lead. Kenny Gainwell broke free for 20 yards, then McLaughlin drilled a 42-yard kick for a 9-0 halftime score.
Atlanta had time to climb back, but Tampa Bay’s runners took over after halftime. Irving exploded around the left side for 46 yards, racing from the Buccaneers’ 19-yard line to the Atlanta 35. Gainwell followed with a 28-yard dash to the 6. Two plays later, Irving powered through the middle for a 4-yard touchdown. McLaughlin’s extra point pushed the lead to 16-0 late in the third quarter.
That score mattered because it forced Atlanta to throw more often. Tampa Bay’s defensive backs stayed ready. Cornerback Zyon McCollum intercepted Penix early in the fourth quarter, the Falcons’ fourth lost possession. Penix did finally strike Dotson for a 76-yard pass from deep in Atlanta territory, but the drive stalled inside the Tampa Bay 25.
The Buccaneers then finished the job the same way they had controlled it: on the ground. Gainwell carried repeatedly as Tampa Bay drained the clock. He finished with 140 rushing yards, giving the Buccaneers a fierce two-runner attack alongside Irving. Atlanta managed 99 rushing yards, with Bijan Robinson fighting for 76, but the Falcons went 0-for-12 on third down and never reached the end zone.
Tampa Bay is now 3-5 and heads to face the Chicago Bears with a blueprint for steady football: run hard, protect the lead, and let the defense create stops. Atlanta falls to 3-5 before meeting the Cincinnati Bengals. After last week’s breakthrough, the Falcons learned that every new chapter demands the same sharp focus.
