While the Lakers' Stars Recover, Austin Reaves Is Breaking Out
The Los Angeles Lakers have faced a tough start to the 2025-26 NBA season. With both Luka Dončić and LeBron James sidelined by injuries, the team has had to rely on new leaders. That’s when Austin Reaves stepped up, and he has been nothing short of amazing.
A Breakout Star Emerges
Through the first five games, Reaves has played the best basketball of his young career. He’s averaging 34 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds per game, shooting over 50 percent from the field and nearly 40 percent from three-point range. His combination of scoring and playmaking has kept the Lakers competitive while their superstars heal.
Reaves exploded for a career-high 51 points against the Kings on October 26, followed by 41 points versus Portland the next night. On October 29, he dished 16 assists and hit a game-winning buzzer-beater against Minnesota. He’s now the first Laker since Hall of Famer Jerry West in 1971 to open a season with five straight games of at least 25 points and 5 assists.
The Team Around Him
This year’s Lakers look very different from the start of last season. The team shocked the basketball world by trading Anthony Davis to Dallas for Luka Dončić. They also added center Deandre Ayton and defensive guard Marcus Smart. When healthy, the lineup could be one of the most exciting in the league.
For now, though, LeBron James remains out with sciatica, and Dončić continues to recover from leg and finger injuries. Their absence has forced Reaves to take control of the offense, showing confidence far beyond his years.
A Rising Leader
Fans and analysts across the NBA are taking notice. Social media is full of highlights from Reaves’s scoring runs, clutch plays, and fiery competitiveness. Teammates have praised his leadership and calm under pressure.
What makes Reaves special isn’t just the numbers , it’s the way he’s guiding the Lakers through adversity. His ability to create for others, attack the rim, and hit key shots has given Los Angeles hope during a difficult stretch.
Looking Ahead
The Lakers sit at the center of NBA attention. When Luka and LeBron return, they’ll join a team that has discovered a new star in Austin Reaves. If he keeps playing at this level, the Lakers might not just survive their injuries, they could become contenders once again.
