Bills Defeat Chiefs 28-21 in Epic AFC Showdown
The Buffalo Bills hosted the Kansas City Chiefs in one of the most anticipated games of Week 9, with both teams entering as AFC powerhouses. The Bills came in at 5-2, riding high after their dominant 40-9 victory over Carolina where James Cook exploded for 216 rushing yards. Meanwhile, the Chiefs arrived at 5-3, fresh off consecutive blowout wins and looking to extend their championship pursuit with Patrick Mahomes leading a revitalized offense.
First Quarter: Bills Strike First
The game started with Buffalo showing exactly why they're considered the AFC's most complete team. Josh Allen methodically moved the Bills down the field, connecting with his reliable targets Khalil Shakir and utilizing James Cook's versatile skill set. The drive culminated in a beautiful 23-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dalton Kincaid, who had been looking to bounce back from his injury-plagued 2024 season. The Bills took an early 7-0 lead.
Kansas City struggled to find their rhythm early, with Mahomes missing connections to Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice. The Chiefs' three-and-out forced them to punt, giving Buffalo excellent field position to continue their strong start.
Second Quarter: Back-and-forth Battle
The Chiefs answered back in spectacular fashion to open the second quarter. In a creative play call, they handed the ball directly to Rashee Rice, who powered into the end zone from 3 yards out for his first rushing touchdown of the season. Rice, who had been building tremendous momentum since returning from suspension, showed his versatility beyond just catching passes.
Buffalo responded immediately with another methodical drive. After Dalton Kincaid made a spectacular 47-yard catch down the sideline, backup running back Ty Johnson punched in a 3-yard touchdown run, extending the Bills' lead to 14-7.
The quarter became a showcase of elite quarterback play. Mahomes found his groove, connecting with Travis Kelce for 20 yards and then launching a perfect 40-yard bomb to Hollywood Brown that brought the Chiefs to the one-yard line. However, Buffalo's defense held strong, forcing Kansas City to settle for a Harrison Butker field goal.
With time running out in the half, Allen showed why he's considered one of the NFL's most dynamic quarterbacks. He found Dawson Knox for 30 yards, then punched in a one-yard touchdown run himself, giving Buffalo a 21-10 halftime advantage.
Second Half: Chiefs Rally Falls Short
The third quarter belonged to Buffalo's ground game. James Cook, building on his breakout 2024 campaign, consistently found running lanes and kept the Chiefs' defense off balance. Allen capped off another impressive drive with another one-yard rushing touchdown, extending the lead to 28-10.
Kansas City showed their championship mettle in the fourth quarter. Kareem Hunt, who had been carving out a valuable role in his second stint with the Chiefs, powered in from 2 yards out for a touchdown. The Chiefs even converted a two-point conversion when Mahomes found Kelce, cutting the deficit to 28-18.
However, Buffalo's defense made the game's biggest play when they intercepted Mahomes late in the fourth quarter. Despite a missed 52-yard field goal that gave Kansas City one final chance, the Bills' pass rush pressured Mahomes on the final drives, sealing the victory.
Looking Ahead
This victory improves Buffalo to 6-2 and strengthens their position atop the competitive AFC playoff race. The balanced offensive attack that Sean McDermott has built, featuring Allen's dual-threat ability and Cook's explosive running, continues to make them Super Bowl contenders.
Kansas City falls to 5-4 but remains in strong playoff position. Despite the loss, Mahomes' connection with his healthy receiving corps of Rice, Kelce, and Brown shows promise for their championship defense.
Both teams will look to bounce back as they continue their pursuit of AFC supremacy in the coming weeks.
