Buccaneers Bounce Back with 20-17 Victory Over Cardinals Behind Mayfield's Leadership
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered Sunday's matchup desperately needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. At 6-5 and coming off a crushing 34-7 loss to the Rams, the Bucs faced the struggling Arizona Cardinals (3-8) in what looked like a perfect bounce-back opportunity.
The Cardinals, led by quarterback Jacoby Brissett filling in for the injured Kyler Murray, were searching for their first win in five games. Despite their disappointing record, Arizona had shown fight in recent weeks, particularly through the stellar play of tight end Trey McBride and rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
First Quarter: Defensive Battle
Both teams started slowly in a defensive slugfest. The Buccaneers' opening drive stalled when Baker Mayfield was sacked and fumbled, though running back Rachaad White recovered the loose ball. Arizona's first possession showed promise as Brissett connected with Harrison Jr. twice for 18 yards, but the drive ended in disappointment when safety Antoine Winfield Jr. intercepted a pass intended for Michael Wilson in the red zone.
The quarter ended scoreless, with both offenses struggling to find rhythm against aggressive defenses.
Second Quarter: Bucs Strike First
Tampa Bay finally broke through midway through the second quarter. After a methodical drive featuring Chris Godwin's 31-yard reception down the left sideline, the Bucs settled for a 25-yard field goal by Chase McLaughlin to take a 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals responded with urgency as the half wound down. Brissett led a brilliant two-minute drill, completing passes to Harrison Jr. (21 yards) and Wilson (10 yards) to move into field goal range. Chad Ryland nailed a 52-yard field goal as time expired, tying the game 3-3 at halftime.
Tampa Bay wasn't finished, though. With 1:39 remaining, Mayfield orchestrated his own scoring drive, capped by a creative 2-yard touchdown pass to offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs. The Bucs took a 10-3 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter: Explosive Scoring
The second half exploded with offensive fireworks. Arizona struck first when Brissett found running back Bam Knight for a 15-yard touchdown pass, capping a 10-play, 80-yard drive that showcased the Cardinals' balanced attack. Knight had been a workhorse, carrying the ball effectively and contributing 36 receiving yards.
Tampa Bay answered immediately. Mayfield found his groove, completing a 23-yard pass to Emeka Egbuka before Bucky Irving punched in a 13-yard touchdown run. The young running back, playing through minor injuries, showed his explosiveness when healthy.
The quarter ended with Arizona trailing 17-10, but the Cardinals had proven they could move the ball against Tampa Bay's defense.
Fourth Quarter: McBride's Heroics
The final quarter belonged to Trey McBride. The Cardinals' star tight end continued his breakout season, hauling in crucial catches to keep drives alive. His biggest moment came with 5:02 remaining when Brissett found him for a 15-yard touchdown pass, tying the game 17-17.
McBride finished with 8 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown, adding another stellar performance to his career-defining 2025 campaign. Brissett threw for 301 yards and 2 touchdowns, outdueling Mayfield's 194 yards and 1 touchdown.
However, McLaughlin provided the game-winner with 9:03 left, drilling a 57-yard field goal that proved to be the difference.
Looking Ahead
This victory improves Tampa Bay to 7-5, keeping them firmly in the playoff hunt despite their recent struggles. The Bucs showed resilience after their embarrassing loss to Los Angeles, with Mayfield managing the game effectively and the defense creating key turnovers.
Arizona falls to 3-9, extending their losing streak to four games. Despite the loss, the Cardinals showed improvement, particularly from Brissett and their receiving corps.
Both teams will look to build on this performance as they prepare for their next challenges in the final stretch of the season.
