The Chicago Bears arrived in Atlanta needing a fast answer after a rough loss at Green Bay. Caleb Williams and the Bears gave one from the opening drive, then held on through a late Falcons charge for a 31-23 win Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Chicago entered at 3-2, still chasing a second straight NFC North title. Atlanta, 2-3 under new coach Kevin Stefanski, hoped its powerful running game led by Bijan Robinson could pull the team back to .500. Instead, Chicago’s defense kept Robinson from taking over and made the Falcons play from behind all afternoon.

Williams started sharp. He connected with tight end Colston Loveland for 16 yards on the first snap, and the Bears marched into Atlanta territory. Roschon Johnson added a 12-yard catch-and-run on a clever lateral play, setting up Loveland’s 14-yard touchdown catch. Chicago led 7-0.

The Bears struck again after Atlanta’s first punt. Williams hit Rome Odunze for 23 yards and Luther Burden III for 25, moving Chicago near the goal line. D’Andre Swift powered through for a 4-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Robinson, who had entered as one of the league’s hottest runners, broke free for a 23-yard run in the second quarter. But Chicago limited him to nine carries and 61 rushing yards, making every Falcons drive harder.

Michael Penix Jr. gave Atlanta a spark when he found Drake London for 39 yards, then hit Jahan Dotson for a 13-yard touchdown. The score was 14-7, but a huge special-teams mistake changed the game before halftime. Atlanta returner Zachariah Branch muffed a punt, meaning he lost control of the kick, and Chicago recovered at the Falcons’ 10-yard line. Swift scored two plays later for his second touchdown and a 21-7 halftime lead.

Chicago kept pressing after the break. Williams guided a 69-yard drive with key throws to Burden and Johnson, and Johnson finished it with a 4-yard touchdown for a 28-7 lead. Then Branch fumbled the next kickoff, handing Chicago another short field. Cairo Santos added a 50-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to make it 31-7.

Atlanta did not quit. Penix led two quick touchdown drives, finding Kyle Pitts Sr. for scores of 10 and 5 yards. Both two-point passes worked, and suddenly the Falcons were within 31-23 with 5:41 left. After Johnson fumbled, Penix had a chance to pull Atlanta even closer. But cornerback Kyler Gordon sacked him, forced a fumble, and linebacker Devin Bush recovered it. Chicago then ran down the clock.

Williams threw for 305 yards without an interception, while Burden caught eight passes for 95 yards. The Bears improved to 4-2 and will carry renewed confidence into a matchup with New England. Atlanta fell to 2-4 and faces San Francisco next, knowing its late fight showed promise but its early mistakes made the climb too steep.
