Buffalo Spotlight: Lake Erie and Snow

Buffalo sits by Lake Erie, near Niagara Falls, and cheers hard for its snowy football team.
Buffalo: A City by the Lake
Buffalo sits at the eastern edge of Lake Erie in western New York. It lies right where the United States meets Canada. The Niagara River begins its journey north from this very point. Cold air moving across the open lake often creates dramatic snowstorms across the region. Even so, people proudly call Buffalo the City of Good Neighbors, a name earned through generations of neighbors helping neighbors during hard winters.
The Erie Canal and Niagara Falls
Buffalo grew quickly into a busy port city after workers finished building the Erie Canal back in 1825. This canal linked the Great Lakes all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. The new water route let goods travel faster and cheaper than ever before, drawing traders and settlers to the growing city. Just north of downtown, the thundering waters of Niagara Falls still draw millions of visitors and power homes across the region.
Football, Wings, and Team Spirit
Buffalo shows its deep community pride through unwavering support for its football team. Loyal fans fill Highmark Stadium even during freezing winter games, season after season. That same spirit of loyalty runs through the whole city. Buffalo also earned a place in food history as the birthplace of the spicy chicken wing, first cooked up at the Anchor Bar back in 1964 and loved nationwide ever since.
