Dallas Trades Anthony Davis to the Wizards
The Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks completed a blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to Washington. In return, the Mavericks received two first-round draft picks, three second-round picks, and a mix of veteran and young bench players. For two teams near the bottom of the standings, the deal was less about the present and more about choosing very different paths forward.
What the Wizards Are Trying to Build
The Wizards are 14th in the East with a 13–36 record, so winning right now is not the main goal. Instead, Washington is trying to build a clear plan for the future. Trading for Trae Young gave them a real star to lead the offense and now they brought in Davis to lead the defense..
The Wizards plan to sit both Young and Davis for the rest of the season so that they can lose games a get a high draft pick. They hope to make a big leap next season when Young and Davis are healthy and push for the playoffs. Pairing Davis with Sarr could create one of the biggest and strongest defensive frontcourts in the NBA, while Young’s passing will benefit everyone, especially shooters like Tre Johnson.
Dallas Moves On From a Tough Era
The Mavericks are 12th in the West at 19–31 and clearly thinking about the draft. Last season, the Mavericks shocked the NBA by trading away Luka Dončić. The idea was to build around Davis and defense, but injuries quickly ruined that plan. Davis missed time, the offense struggled, and Dallas fell out of the playoff picture.
This trade feels like the final step in moving on from the disastrous Luka Dončić deal. In total, Dallas got very little back for a young superstar, which hurts badly. Now, the franchise will shift their focus to building around #1 pick Cooper Flagg, who is on pace to win Rookie of the Year.
