Derrick Henry Is Proving Age Is Just a Number
At 31 years old, Derrick Henry has already built a career that puts him among the best running backs in NFL history. Many thought his best days might be behind him after a heavy workload in 2024, when he touched the ball nearly 400 times. But in Week 1 of the 2025 season, Henry reminded everyone why he is still called “King Henry.”
Against the Buffalo Bills, Henry ran through defenders with power and speed. He scored on a 30-yard touchdown run, showing the same burst that made him a star years ago. He finished with more than 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns, proving he is still capable of taking over games. For a player his age, that type of performance is rare. Most running backs slow down after 30, but Henry looked as fresh as ever.
Why the Ravens Need Henry
The Ravens need Henry to stay strong if they want to make a deep playoff run. Last year, Baltimore tied for the third most touchdowns in the league. Lamar Jackson’s ability to throw and run makes the offense dangerous, but Henry’s power on the ground gives the Ravens balance. When defenses load up to stop Jackson, Henry can punish them between the tackles. If he keeps producing like he did in Week 1, Baltimore could have the most unstoppable offense in football.
Henry also brings leadership and toughness. Younger players like Zay Flowers look up to him, and his work ethic sets a standard for the whole team. In a long season, having a veteran who knows how to prepare and recover is almost as important as the yards he gains on the field.
The Challenge Ahead Against Cleveland
The challenge does not get easier. In Week 2, Henry will face the Cleveland Browns and their superstar defender Myles Garrett. Garrett is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL and he is also tough against the run. His speed and strength allow him to break into the backfield before plays even develop. For Henry to succeed, the Ravens offensive line must open lanes and keep Garrett from wrecking the game.
If Henry can once again defy age and deliver a strong performance against Garrett and the Browns, it will show the league that he is still one of the most dangerous weapons in football. For the Ravens, it could be the key to proving they are real Super Bowl contenders in 2025.
