Dolphins Swim Past Jets 27-21 for Their First Win!
The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets entered Monday night with completely different stories to tell. Miami came in looking to bounce back from their slow 0-3 start, hoping their healthy stars could finally click together. The Jets also arrived winless at 0-3, trying to find their identity under new head coach Aaron Glenn's run-heavy system with quarterback Justin Fields leading the charge.
What followed was an absolute thriller that showcased both teams' potential and problems.
First Quarter: Defense Rules Early
The opening quarter belonged to the defenses. Miami struck first when kicker Patterson nailed a 47-yard field goal after a steady drive led by running back De'Von Achane and tight end Darren Waller. The Jets answered right back with their ground game doing exactly what coach Glenn wanted. Fields showed off his scrambling skills with a beautiful 19-yard run, and the running back duo of Breece Hall and Braelon Allen powered down the field. However, Allen fumbled at the goal line, and safety Fitzpatrick recovered for Miami. The quarter ended with the Dolphins leading 3-0.
Second Quarter: Waller Makes His Mark
Miami's offense came alive in the second quarter. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa found his rhythm, connecting with speedster Tyreek Hill for a spectacular 28-yard gain. Then came the big moment - Tagovailoa found Darren Waller for a 4-yard touchdown pass! The veteran tight end, coming out of retirement, showed he still had magic in his hands. The Jets fought back with their own impressive drive. Fields displayed his dual-threat ability, but a crucial fumble ended their momentum. Miami led 10-3 at halftime after the Jets managed a 58-yard field goal by Folk.
Third Quarter: Explosive Plays Everywhere
The third quarter featured many touchdowns and a devastating injury to Tyreek Hill, which we will cover in another article. Miami started fast when they recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. Achane bulldozed his way down the field, and Waller grabbed his second touchdown catch of the night, making it 17-3. But Fields had an answer, and what an answer it was! The athletic quarterback broke free for an incredible 43-yard touchdown run, showing exactly why the Jets built their offense around his legs. The score was now 17-10. Miami responded immediately with Achane punching in a 9-yard touchdown run after some beautiful passes to Waddle set up the score. The Dolphins led 24-10 heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Jets Rally Falls Short
The fourth quarter belonged to drama and action. The Jets showed they wouldn't quit, scoring a field goal to cut the deficit to 24-13. Miami answered with another field goal to push their lead to 27-13. Then came the Jets' final surge. Fields found his college teammate Garrett Wilson for a 23-yard touchdown pass with under two minutes left. The Jets even converted a two-point conversion to make it 27-21! They tried an onside kick, but Miami recovered and ran out the clock.
The Final Impact
De'Von Achane was the star of the night with 99 rushing yards and a touchdown, plus 13 receiving yards. His explosive performance showed why Miami believes he can be a game-changer when healthy. Darren Waller proved his comeback was real with two touchdown catches, giving Tua a reliable red zone target.
For the Jets, Fields threw for 226 yards and added 81 rushing yards with a touchdown, showing flashes of the dynamic playmaker they hoped for. Wilson caught 10 passes for 84 yards and a score, proving their college connection is still strong.
Miami improves to 1-3 and will look to build momentum in their next game. The Jets fall to 0-4, extending their losing streak to four games, but showed fight that could spark their season moving forward.
