Falcons Soar Past Saints 19-17 in Season Finale Showdown
The Atlanta Falcons (7-9) and New Orleans Saints (6-10) entered their Week 18 division rivalry game with different stories to tell. The Falcons came in riding high on a three-game winning streak, led by superstar running back Bijan Robinson's incredible performances. Meanwhile, the Saints were also surging with their own four-game win streak behind rookie quarterback Tyler Shough's remarkable development.
First Quarter: Defense Rules Early
The game started with both teams struggling to find their rhythm on offense. The Saints struck first when Juwan Johnson caught a 19-yard pass from Shough, but he fumbled the ball right into the hands of Atlanta's defense. The Falcons couldn't capitalize on the turnover as Kirk Cousins threw an interception to defensive end Granderson near the goal line.
Atlanta's special teams came up huge when they blocked a Saints punt, giving the Falcons great field position at the New Orleans 8-yard line. After a holding penalty pushed them back, Cousins connected with Drake London for a 15-yard touchdown pass to put Atlanta on the board 7-0.
Second Quarter: Saints Answer Back
The second quarter belonged to Tyler Shough and the Saints' ground game. Audric Estime, who had been such a key part of New Orleans' recent success, powered the Saints down the field with strong running between the tackles. After a long drive that showcased Shough's poise in the pocket, the rookie quarterback punched it in himself with a 1-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game 7-7.
The Falcons managed to add a 40-yard field goal before halftime, taking a 10-7 lead into the locker room. Bijan Robinson, despite his recent explosive performances, was held in check by the Saints defense in the first half.
Third Quarter: Field Goals Galore
The third quarter turned into a defensive battle with both teams settling for field goals. Cousins found his rhythm with a beautiful 37-yard completion to London, setting up another Atlanta field goal to extend their lead to 13-7.
The Saints responded with their own scoring drive, powered by Estime's physical running style. The rookie back carried the load with multiple tough runs, but the Falcons defense stiffened in the red zone, forcing New Orleans to settle for a 29-yard field goal. Atlanta led 13-10 heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Dramatic Finish
The fourth quarter delivered all the excitement fans could want! The Falcons added another field goal to push their lead to 16-10, but the Saints weren't finished. With time running out, Shough showed why he's been so impressive during New Orleans' win streak.
The young quarterback engineered a masterful two-minute drive, completing passes to Dante Pettis for 26 yards and then 12 yards to move into the red zone. With just over a minute left, Shough found Ronnie Bell in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown pass, giving the Saints a 17-16 lead!
But the drama wasn't over! Atlanta's defense came up with a crucial interception by Alford, who returned it 59 yards to set up the game-winning field goal. The Falcons kicked a 38-yarder with under three minutes left to win 19-17.
Looking Ahead
This victory gives Atlanta their fourth straight win to finish 8-9, showing real momentum heading into the offseason. The Falcons proved they can win close games and their young core continues to develop.
The Saints finish 6-11 but showed tremendous growth with Shough under center. Despite the loss, their five wins in the final six games provides hope for next season.
Both teams will now turn their attention to the 2026 NFL Draft and free agency as they prepare for next season's challenges.
