Jahmyr Gibbs just turned the Arizona Cardinals’ field into his personal racetrack. The Detroit Lions running back piled up 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a 45-21 Week 5 win, giving Detroit a burst of energy before its biggest home game yet. On Sunday at 4:25 p.m. EDT, the 3-2 Lions welcome the 4-2 Green Bay Packers to Ford Field for a Week 7 NFC North showdown.
This is a clash between two teams climbing toward the same goal: control of a tough division. Detroit is trying to prove last season’s playoff miss is in the past. Green Bay is chasing a fourth straight playoff trip and wants to avoid the late-season slide that ended its previous run. The Packers arrive on a three-game winning streak, while the Lions bring one of the league’s most explosive attacks.
Detroit scores nearly 33 points per game, and its stars make defenses cover every blade of grass. Gibbs is the spark. He has already run for 504 yards and seven touchdowns in five games, but he is also dangerous on short passes. When defenders rush toward him, Jared Goff can look for Amon-Ra St. Brown, whose quick routes and strong hands have produced five touchdown catches. Jameson Williams adds another problem with deep speed, while tight end Sam LaPorta can find openings over the middle.
That variety makes the Lions feel like a puzzle with many moving pieces. Goff showed it against Arizona, throwing touchdown passes to LaPorta and Williams while Gibbs controlled the ground game. Green Bay must tackle cleanly and prevent small gains from turning into long sprints.
The Packers have their own big-play artist in Christian Watson. Watson has 538 receiving yards and six touchdowns, giving Jordan Love a target who can stretch the field in a hurry. Tucker Kraft brings power after catches and offers Love a strong option near the middle. Yet Green Bay’s rushing attack has averaged fewer than 60 yards per game. MarShawn Lloyd will need to find room so Detroit cannot focus only on stopping passes.
Detroit’s defense has allowed plenty of yards and almost 30 points per game, so Love could have chances if his back allows him to play. Watson is also listed as questionable with an ankle injury, along with several other Packers receivers. Those updates matter because Green Bay is already missing wide receiver Jayden Reed and pass rusher Micah Parsons. The Lions have injury concerns in their secondary too, with Rock Ya-Sin questionable and safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph still working their way back.
Green Bay’s recent defense has helped it win close, sturdy games, including a 23-13 victory over Dallas. Still, Detroit’s home-field energy, deeper group of healthy playmakers, and Gibbs’ blazing form give the Lions the edge. Prediction: Detroit will win.
