Jahmyr Gibbs carried Detroit’s season hopes one hard yard at a time on Sunday. With the NFC North rivals tied late at Ford Field, the Lions running back helped turn a blocked Green Bay field-goal try into the drive that set up a 20-17 Detroit win. The Lions entered at 3-2, trying to show last year’s playoff miss was behind them. The Packers arrived 4-2 on a three-game winning streak, hoping to take charge in the division race.
Green Bay struck first with an opening drive full of sharp throws by Jordan Love. He hit Matthew Golden for 22 yards, Savion Williams for 27, and moved the Packers to the Detroit 3. But the drive ended with a field-goal try wide right, a missed chance that would matter in a game this tight.
Detroit answered with its fast passing attack. Jared Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown for 28 yards, then Jameson Williams for 24. On the next play, Williams caught a 16-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 Lions lead. Love and the Packers answered right back. Tucker Kraft turned a short catch into a 14-yard touchdown with 58 seconds left in the first quarter, tying it 7-7.
Goff kept finding St. Brown, who made nine catches for 153 yards and repeatedly gave Detroit a way out of trouble. A 40-yard field goal by Detroit kicker Bates put the Lions ahead 10-7. Yet Detroit left points on the field when Gibbs fumbled at the Green Bay 8 with 30 seconds left before halftime.
The Packers grabbed that opening after the break. A fumbled exchange by Goff gave Green Bay the ball near midfield, and Love soon found Josh Jacobs for a 25-yard touchdown. Green Bay led 14-10, and the visitors had flipped the game with a mistake-free response.
Then Detroit’s big-play stars charged back. Goff hit Jameson Williams for 30 yards, and Gibbs kept the drive moving with tough runs. Goff finished it by finding Williams for a 10-yard touchdown, their second scoring connection of the day. Detroit led 17-14 after three quarters.
A safety’s interception by Brian Branch stopped a Green Bay threat early in the fourth, but the Packers kept pushing. Love threw for 274 yards, and Green Bay drove for a tying 43-yard field goal with 7:10 left. After Detroit’s next possession stalled, Green Bay marched into range again. This time, linebacker Wonnum blocked a 35-yard field-goal try with 3:25 remaining.
That block changed everything. Goff connected with Sam LaPorta for 18 yards, and Green Bay added a roughing-the-passer penalty. Gibbs then burst 15 yards to the Green Bay 25 and kept powering ahead as Detroit drained the clock. His 29 carries and 116 rushing yards showed the Lions trusted him with the biggest job. Bates drilled the 22-yard winner as time expired.
Detroit is now 4-2 and heads to Minnesota with a division win built on patience after mistakes. Green Bay falls to 4-3 and visits Carolina next, knowing it had chances but could not finish the final chapter at Ford Field.
