The Chargers have reached a hard part of their 2026 story: seven games, seven losses, and another chance to stop the slide. On Sunday at SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles will face a Houston team that also needs a lift after its 27-21 overtime loss to the Giants. The Texans are 2-5, but they arrive with a passing attack that can strike like a lightning flash. This Week 9 game is about which quarterback can turn pressure into progress.

Justin Herbert has carried a heavy load for the Chargers. He has thrown for 1,398 yards, but opponents have picked off 10 of his passes. Those takeaways have often ended drives that Los Angeles needed to finish. Herbert can also escape trouble and run; his 183 rushing yards show how often he has created plays when the pocket, the space around a quarterback, breaks down.

That challenge grows at home because the Chargers are missing several linemen, including tackle Rashawn Slater and center Tyler Biadasz. Those blockers help protect Herbert and open lanes for Omarion Hampton. Hampton has the power to push through arm tackles and the speed to burst into open grass, but he has lost two fumbles. Los Angeles needs him to hold tight to the ball and give its offense a steady beat.

When Herbert throws quickly, Ladd McConkey could become a key character. McConkey uses sharp cuts to shake free, and his 286 receiving yards in six games lead the way among the listed Chargers targets. Quentin Johnston gives Herbert a bigger target downfield. Together, they must find room against a Houston defense built to make every throw difficult. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter can race toward quarterbacks, while Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter challenge receivers on the outside.

Still, Houston’s own defense has allowed 24.3 points per game this season, nearly the same as its offense scores. That makes C.J. Stroud’s calm, accurate arm especially important. Stroud has thrown 11 touchdown passes and only one interception, a sign that he usually protects the ball while looking for big plays. Nico Collins is his towering go-to receiver, using his size and strong hands to win catches downfield. Collins already has three touchdown catches despite appearing in only five games.

The Texans will be without David Montgomery, their tough veteran runner, because of a groin injury. Houston rushed for only 84.7 yards per game even with him, so the visitors may lean even more on Stroud, Collins, and tight end Dalton Schultz. Schultz can work underneath the defense when deeper routes are covered.

The Chargers allow 25 points per game and will miss safety Derwin James Jr., so Houston has a clear path to attack through the air. Los Angeles has the home crowd and Herbert’s powerful arm, but the Texans have protected the ball better and moved it more consistently. Prediction: Houston wins by letting Stroud guide the game with smart throws and timely big plays.
