How Basketball Courts Are Made
A basketball court might look like just a shiny floor with lines and hoops, but building one takes careful planning and skilled work. Every part of the court is designed so players can run safely and the ball can bounce the right way.
Starting with the Foundation
The process begins with a strong base. Most indoor basketball courts are built on top of concrete. Workers make sure the concrete is completely flat and level. If the surface is uneven, the ball will not bounce properly and players could get hurt.
Before building the floor, workers check for moisture and cracks. This helps prevent damage later.
Building the Wooden Floor
Next comes the hardwood floor. Most courts use maple wood because it is strong and smooth. Maple also helps the basketball bounce evenly.
The wood is not placed directly on the concrete. Builders add layers of padding and support underneath. These layers act like shock absorbers, helping protect players’ knees and ankles when they jump and land.
Workers carefully place long wooden boards side by side across the entire court.
Sanding and Painting
After the boards are installed, large machines sand the surface until it feels perfectly smooth. Then a protective seal is added to keep sweat and dirt from damaging the wood.
Once the seal dries, painters measure and add the court lines. They carefully paint the center circle, free-throw lanes, sidelines, and the three-point arc. Many courts also include a team logo at center court.
The Final Touches
Several clear finish coats are added over the paint to protect the floor and give it a glossy shine. The court must dry for several days before it can be used.
Finally, workers install hoops that stand exactly 10 feet high, along with padding for safety.
When everything is finished, the court is ready for games!
