Jaguars Rally Past Cardinals 27-24 in Overtime Thriller
The Jacksonville Jaguars entered Sunday night's matchup with a 6-4 record, riding high after their dominant victory over the Chargers. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals sat at 3-7, desperately searching for answers after their crushing loss to San Francisco. Both teams knew this game could define their seasons.
First Quarter Sets the Stage
The Jaguars struck first blood when Trevor Lawrence found Travis Etienne Jr. for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Lawrence looked sharp early, connecting with tight end Brenton Strange for 30 yards to set up the score. However, the Cardinals answered quickly when a fumble recovery by defensive tackle Walter Nolen led to an easy touchdown, tying the game 7-7.
Second Quarter Battle
Arizona took their first lead of the night when Bam Knight punched in a 1-yard rushing touchdown, capping off an impressive drive. The Cardinals moved the ball effectively behind Jacoby Brissett, who found his favorite target Trey McBride multiple times. McBride, coming off his breakout season performance, continued his reliable play with several key catches. Jacksonville managed a field goal before halftime, making it 14-10 Arizona.
Third Quarter Momentum Shift
The Jaguars came out firing in the second half. Lawrence connected with Jakobi Meyers for a 10-yard touchdown pass, giving Jacksonville a 17-14 lead. Lawrence showed the poise that made him a first overall pick, despite throwing three interceptions in the game. The Cardinals' defense forced those turnovers, but couldn't capitalize consistently on the extra possessions.
Fourth Quarter Drama
With 7:12 remaining, Greg Dortch hauled in a spectacular 39-yard touchdown pass from Brissett to put Arizona ahead 21-17. Dortch finished with 53 receiving yards and the crucial score. But Lawrence and the Jaguars responded like champions. The young quarterback found Parker Washington for a 9-yard touchdown with 3:54 left, reclaiming the lead 24-21.
Arizona wasn't finished. With six seconds remaining, kicker Chad Ryland nailed a 29-yard field goal to force overtime at 24-24. Michael Wilson led the Cardinals' late-game heroics with 118 receiving yards on 10 catches, showing the consistency that has marked his breakout season.
Overtime Excellence
In the extra period, Lawrence and the Jaguars controlled the action. Washington, who has emerged as a reliable slot receiver and return specialist, caught a crucial 25-yard pass to set up the winning field goal. Kicker Cameron Little split the uprights from 52 yards out, giving Jacksonville the 27-24 victory.
Travis Etienne Jr. continued his career renaissance with 86 rushing yards on 15 carries, plus the receiving touchdown. His partnership with rookie Bhayshul Tuten gives the Jaguars a powerful ground game that complements Lawrence's arm.
For Arizona, Brissett threw for 317 yards on 33-of-49 passing, but the Cardinals couldn't overcome their slow start to the season. McBride added 79 receiving yards on nine catches, maintaining his status as the team's most dependable offensive weapon.
Looking Ahead
This victory improves Jacksonville to 7-4 and keeps them firmly in the AFC playoff race. Their balanced offensive attack and improved defense make them a dangerous team as the season enters its final stretch.
Arizona falls to 3-8, and their playoff hopes have essentially evaporated. However, the strong performances from Wilson, McBride, and Dortch provide building blocks for the future.
The Jaguars will look to continue their winning streak in their next matchup, while the Cardinals must regroup and focus on developing their young talent for next season.
