Jets Soar Past Browns 27-20 Behind Hall's Explosive Performance
The New York Jets (1-7) and Cleveland Browns (2-6) entered MetLife Stadium on Sunday night with both teams desperately searching for answers to their disappointing seasons. The Jets were coming off their first victory of 2025, while the Browns had dropped two straight games after early-season promise.
First Quarter Fireworks Set the Tone
The game exploded into action right from the start! Cleveland struck first when rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel found tight end David Njoku for a 9-yard touchdown pass, capping off an impressive drive. Gabriel showed great poise in the pocket, connecting with Jerry Jeudy multiple times to move the Browns down the field.
But the Jets answered immediately in spectacular fashion! Return specialist Keon Nwangwu took the ensuing kickoff and raced 99 yards for a touchdown, electrifying the home crowd and tying the game 7-7.
The fireworks weren't finished yet. On Cleveland's next possession, the Browns struggled to move the ball and were forced to punt. That's when Jets return man Isaiah Williams provided another jaw-dropping moment, taking the punt 74 yards to the house for another touchdown! Just like that, New York led 14-7 after an incredible sequence of special teams magic.
Second Quarter Battle
The second quarter belonged to the defenses and field position battles. Cleveland's defense came up with a huge play when safety Ronnie Hickman intercepted a Justin Fields pass intended for Garrett Wilson, giving the Browns excellent field position.
Gabriel made the most of the opportunity, finding Jeudy for a beautiful 22-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 14-14. The rookie quarterback showed excellent arm strength and accuracy on the scoring strike.
The Jets managed to add a field goal before halftime, with Nick Folk connecting from 26 yards out. Cleveland answered with their own field goal as time expired, making it 17-17 at the break after Gabriel led a quick two-minute drill.
Third Quarter Grind
The third quarter turned into a defensive struggle as both teams fought for field position. Breece Hall began to take over for the Jets, consistently grinding out tough yards between the tackles. The running back showed the power and vision that made him such a promising player, wearing down Cleveland's defense with his physical running style.
Neither team managed to score in the third quarter, but Hall's dominant ground game was setting up something special for the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter Decisive Moments
The final quarter belonged to Breece Hall and the Jets' rushing attack. Hall broke free for a spectacular 42-yard touchdown run, showing his breakaway speed and making defenders miss in the open field. The touchdown gave New York a 24-17 lead and showcased why Hall was considered one of the league's most dynamic young running backs.
Cleveland fought back with determination. Gabriel used his mobility to extend plays and find open receivers, leading the Browns on a scoring drive that resulted in a field goal to cut the deficit to 24-20.
The Jets added another field goal to extend their lead to 27-20, and their defense held strong in the final minutes to secure the victory.
Looking Ahead
This victory moves the Jets to 2-7 and gives them back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Hall's explosive performance (83 rushing yards and a touchdown) proves that New York's offense can be dangerous when their ground game gets going. Fields managed the game well despite throwing an interception, and the special teams provided two incredible touchdown returns.
For Cleveland, the loss drops them to 2-7 and continues their recent struggles. Gabriel showed flashes of his potential with 167 passing yards and two touchdowns, but six sacks highlighted the ongoing offensive line concerns. Judkins managed 75 rushing yards on 22 carries, continuing his solid rookie campaign.
Both teams will look to build on the positives as they prepare for their next opponents in what remains a developmental season for these young rosters.
