Kenneth Walker III burst through Arrowhead Stadium like a runner chasing daylight, and the Kansas City Chiefs kept their perfect start alive with a 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Kansas City entered 4-0, eager to show last season’s struggles were far behind it. The Chargers arrived 0-5, still hunting for the finish that had slipped away in close games. Walker made sure this chapter belonged to the Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes started with quick strikes to Xavier Worthy, moving Kansas City into Chargers territory. Then Walker took over. After a 13-yard run helped set up Harrison Butker’s 44-yard field goal, Walker ripped through the middle for a 33-yard touchdown. Butker missed the extra point, but the Chiefs had a 9-0 lead and early control.
Los Angeles answered with its best drive of the first quarter. Justin Herbert found Ladd McConkey for 17 yards, and he used two scrambles to push the Chargers near the goal line. The drive slowed there, but Cameron Dicker’s 23-yard field goal made it 9-3.
The Chargers had a huge chance to flip the game in the second quarter. A Chiefs linebacker intercepted Herbert and returned the ball deep into Los Angeles territory, but a roughing-the-passer penalty erased the play. Soon after, though, linebacker Jack Cochrane picked off Herbert and returned the ball to the Chargers’ 17. Walker powered the Chiefs to the 2-yard line, yet the Chargers’ defense came up with an even bigger answer. Cornerback Cam Hart intercepted Mahomes in the end zone, stopping a touchdown and keeping the score close.
Kansas City did not blink. Mahomes led a sharp late-half march, hitting Travis Kelce for 24 yards and finding Walker on a short pass to the 2. Walker crashed in for his second touchdown, and Butker added a 50-yard field goal just before halftime. The Chiefs led 19-3.
The Chargers came out fighting after the break. Herbert launched a 57-yard pass to Quentin Johnston, placing the ball at the Kansas City 1. Yet penalties and three incomplete passes forced Los Angeles to settle for Dicker’s 30-yard field goal. That missed chance mattered. The Chargers reached the red zone, the area inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, three times but scored no touchdowns.
Walker kept the Chiefs moving in the fourth quarter, finishing with 128 rushing yards on 19 carries. After a Chargers receiver fumbled near midfield, Mahomes guided a long drive that drained the clock. Walker’s 16-yard run put Kansas City close, and Butker’s 30-yard field goal made it 22-6.
Herbert kept pushing late, but Chiefs defenders sacked him twice on the final drive. Kansas City improved to 5-0 behind Walker’s powerful running and a defense that allowed only two field goals. The Chiefs now head to face the Seattle Seahawks. Los Angeles fell to 0-6 and will meet the Los Angeles Rams next, still searching for the breakthrough that has stayed just out of reach.
