MetLife Stadium will hold a game full of second chances on Sunday afternoon. The New York Jets, 2-5, have lost two tight games in a row, including a 28-25 battle with Miami last week. Across the field, the 3-4 Las Vegas Raiders arrive after three straight losses and need a fast answer after falling 35-21 to the Rams. Both teams have young stars to build around, but this Week 8 meeting may come down to which quarterback can keep the game calm when the pressure rises.
For Geno Smith, this is a return to a place where his NFL story began in 2013. He has traveled a long road since his first years with the Jets, growing into an experienced passer before coming back to New York this season. Smith has thrown 10 touchdown passes against only two interceptions, helping give the Jets a steadier attack. His favorite target, Garrett Wilson, is always moving. Wilson’s sharp cuts and strong hands have helped him collect 37 catches and 444 yards in seven games. The Raiders allow more than 28 points per game, so Smith and Wilson have a chance to find room downfield.
The biggest question for New York is Breece Hall. Hall is questionable with a leg injury after playing only three games this season. If he can play, his speed can change the shape of the offense. He can burst through a gap at the line of scrimmage or catch a short pass and race into open space. If Hall is limited, the Jets will need Smith to stay patient and keep drives alive.
Las Vegas brings a different kind of challenge. The Raiders pass for nearly 277 yards per game, which is far more than their rushing total. Rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza is the team’s long-term leader, but he has played in only one game so far. Whoever directs the Raiders offense, Ashton Jeanty remains its powerful all-purpose engine. Jeanty runs through tackles, catches passes, and has already gained 640 yards from scrimmage. He showed his value against the Rams by helping spark Las Vegas during its late comeback push.
The Raiders also hope tight end Brock Bowers can play through a calf issue. Bowers is a tough matchup because he can line up in different spots and attack the middle of the field. His 455 receiving yards in five games show how quickly he can become a quarterback’s trusted target. The Jets must tackle well and avoid letting Jeanty and Bowers turn short plays into long gains.
New York’s defense has allowed 21.4 points per game, a stronger mark than Las Vegas has managed on defense. The Jets are also at home, and their recent losses were much closer than the Raiders’ rough three-game slide. With Smith’s experience, Wilson’s playmaking, and a defense that has held up better, the Jets should win this important Week 8 showdown.
