McCaffrey and Kittle Power 49ers Past Cardinals 41–22
The San Francisco 49ers came into this game at 6–4, fighting to prove they are still one of the top teams in the NFC. The Arizona Cardinals, sitting at 2–7, were trying to show they could hang with a Super Bowl contender and build hope for the rest of their season. With star running back Christian McCaffrey back and quarterback Brock Purdy returning to the lineup, the 49ers used a powerful, balanced attack to beat Arizona 41–22 and move to 7–4, while the Cardinals fell to 3–7.
First Quarter: Fireworks Right Away
The game started with a bang. Arizona kicked off, and 49ers returner Shepherd Moore exploded down the field for a 98-yard return all the way to the Cardinals’ 1-yard line. On the very next play, McCaffrey powered in behind his right guard for a touchdown. Just 13 seconds into the game, San Francisco led 7–0.
Arizona answered with a steady drive led by quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who spread the ball to Michael Wilson and tight end Trey McBride. But the Cardinals stalled and had to punt.
Purdy then started to show why the 49ers were so excited to get him back. He hit Jauan Jennings on a deep throw, then found running back Brian Robinson Jr. and finally tight end George Kittle on a 30-yard strike down the right side for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked, but the 49ers still jumped ahead 13–0.
The Cardinals punched back. Running back Zonovan “Bam” Knight ran hard, and Brissett mixed in short passes before Knight finished the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. After the extra point, the score was 13–7, and Arizona showed they weren’t going away.
Second Quarter: 49ers Take Control
Early in the second quarter, the 49ers leaned on their stars again. McCaffrey ran tough inside, then slipped out of the backfield on a short route. Purdy hit him on the move for a 9-yard touchdown catch. The extra point was no good, but San Francisco stretched the lead to 19–7.
Brissett led a long answer drive highlighted by passes to Dortch and McBride, but the 49ers held in the red zone—the area inside the 20-yard line—forcing a short field goal that made it 19–10.
Purdy stayed calm. He hit Kittle over the middle and used McCaffrey and Robinson to move into field goal range. Kicker Eddy Pineiro drilled one from 48 yards, then, after a late defensive stop and quick passes to Jennings, nailed another from 47 as time expired in the half. The 49ers went into the locker room up 25–10, with their offense in rhythm and their defense bending but not breaking.
Third Quarter: Kittle Strikes Again
In the third quarter, the 49ers kept their foot on the gas. After a short drive stalled, Pineiro hit his third field goal of the night to make it 28–10.
Arizona then put together one of its best drives of the game. Brissett fired deep to Wilson and McBride, using quick throws and no-huddle tempo to wear down the defense. But a pass toward the sideline was picked off by a 49ers cornerback, who raced it back deep into Cardinals territory.
San Francisco quickly took advantage. Robinson ran to set up a first-and-goal, and Purdy found Kittle again on a short route for another touchdown. With the extra point, the 49ers stretched the lead to 35–10 and seemed fully in control.
Fourth Quarter: Cardinals Rally, 49ers Finish
To start the fourth quarter, Brissett and the Cardinals showed real fight. He spread the ball to Xavier Weaver, Emari Demercado, Michael Carter, and finally McBride, who caught a short pass over the middle and powered into the end zone. The Cardinals tried a two-point conversion, a play from the two-yard line worth two points, but Knight was stopped, leaving the score 35–16.
Arizona then tried an onside kick, a short kickoff meant to be recovered by the kicking team. The ball traveled just 11 yards, and 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk safely fell on it to give San Francisco great field position.
From there, McCaffrey went to work. He caught a short pass, ripped off a 20-yard run up the middle, and then bounced to the right edge for another rushing touchdown. The two-point try failed, but the 49ers led 41–16.
The Cardinals put together one last impressive drive. Brissett hit Greg Dortch on several short routes, then fired a deep pass to Dortch for a 17-yard touchdown. Another two-point attempt failed, keeping the score at 41–22. An onside kick was recovered again by San Francisco, and the 49ers ran out the clock with Robinson and backup quarterback Mac Jones taking knees.
What the Win Means
For the 49ers, this 41–22 win is a huge sign that their offense is back. McCaffrey’s three touchdowns and Kittle’s big night in the passing game show how dangerous they can be when their stars are rolling. At 7–4, San Francisco stays firmly in the NFC playoff race and will look to build on this momentum in their next game.
For the Cardinals, falling to 3–7 hurts, but there were bright spots. Brissett showed toughness, McBride was a target monster, and Wilson and Dortch made big plays all over the field. Arizona will try to clean up penalties and red zone mistakes as they get ready for their next opponent and keep fighting to grow this young core.
