Jahmyr Gibbs turned Ford Field into his own fast lane Sunday, rushing for 153 yards and the go-ahead burst in the Detroit Lions’ 19-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Detroit entered at 4-2, trying to prove its playoff miss from last season was fading behind it. Minnesota arrived 6-0 with a defense that had kept games tight all year. By the end, the Lions had handed the Vikings their first loss and shown they could win a tough, ground-based NFC North fight.

Minnesota had an early chance when Kyler Murray hit tight end Ben Yurosek for 24 yards on the first drive. But kicker Will Reichard pushed a 57-yard field-goal try wide right. Detroit answered with a long march that showed both the Vikings’ toughness and the Lions’ patience. Jared Goff connected with Jameson Williams for 46 yards, but a penalty pushed Detroit back. Then a replay erased what first looked like an Amon-Ra St. Brown touchdown. The Lions stayed calm, drove close again, and Jake Bates made a 25-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.

The Vikings struck early in the second quarter. Murray found Aaron Jones Sr. for 15 yards down to the 1, then tossed a one-yard touchdown to Justin Jefferson. Minnesota led 7-3. A few minutes later, cornerback Pierre intercepted Goff, giving the unbeaten visitors another opening.

Yet Detroit’s defense and special teams kept the score close. The Lions forced punts after the interception, and cornerback Reed picked off Murray late in the half. Goff moved Detroit into range before halftime, while Gibbs broke free for 19 yards to set up Bates’ 37-yard field goal. Minnesota led only 7-6 at the break.

The second half became Gibbs’ chapter. Detroit’s offense drove deep into Minnesota territory early in the third quarter, but Bates hit the left upright on a 46-yard try. The Vikings could not turn that escape into points, as Detroit’s pass rush dropped Murray twice on the next series.

Then Gibbs broke the game open. After St. Brown ran for 10 yards on a creative play, Gibbs took a handoff up the middle, burst through a crease, and raced 30 yards for a touchdown. Detroit led 12-7 after the two-point try failed. The Lions finished with 230 rushing yards, using Gibbs and Sione Vaki to keep Minnesota’s defense on the field.

Murray answered like a leader of a team that had not lost. He hit Jordan Addison for a 51-yard gain, then found T.J. Hockenson for an 8-yard touchdown. Murray connected with Addison for the two-point pass, and Minnesota jumped ahead 15-12 with 8:44 left.

Detroit refused to fade. Gibbs ran for 17 yards to start the answer, and Vaki carried the ball three straight times for 27 more. Gibbs then powered the Lions to the 7, where Goff found Williams for the touchdown and a 19-15 lead. Gibbs added runs of 14, eight, and six yards on Detroit’s final drive, helping drain the clock.

The Lions are now 5-2 and head to face the Miami Dolphins with a division-shaping win behind them. Minnesota, now 6-1, faces the Buffalo Bills after learning that even a strong defense must solve Detroit’s rushing storm.
