Cubs Jump Out Early Against Struggling Diamondbacks
The Chicago Cubs hosted the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night in a matchup between two teams heading in different directions. Arizona arrived in Chicago still recovering from a brutal 13-1 loss to the Brewers the previous day, while the Cubs had just won 5-4 against San Diego with a late rally. The Cubs came ready to play from the opening pitch, jumping on starter Zac Gallen immediately. In the first inning, back-to-back hits by Salvador Busch and Zac Kelly brought home three runs before Arizona could record a single out. Chicago's explosive start put the Diamondbacks in an early hole they would struggle to escape. When the first inning ended, the Cubs led 3-0 and had seized all the momentum. Arizona's pitching staff, dealing with several injuries, faced immediate pressure to settle down and keep the game manageable moving forward.
Diamondbacks Battle Back with a Sixth-Inning Home Run
Although Arizona trailed early, the Diamondbacks refused to quit and kept fighting throughout the game. In the third inning, Yandy Vargas singled to right field, driving in Barrosa and getting Arizona on the board at 3-1. The Cubs added another run in the fourth when Dansby Swanson drove in a run with a single, making it 4-1. Things got worse when wild pitches by Gallen allowed Crow-Armstrong to score, stretching Chicago's lead to 5-1. However, Arizona's offense came alive in the sixth inning when Alexandro Perdomo launched a three-run home run to left field, traveling 366 feet and bringing the Diamondbacks within one run. Suddenly, the game was competitive again at 5-6 with momentum shifting toward Arizona's corner of the dugout.
Cubs Hold Off Late Rally to Win Close Contest
Despite Arizona's dramatic comeback in the sixth inning, the Cubs found a way to survive the late-inning pressure. After Perdomo's towering blast cut the deficit to just one run, the game became incredibly tense with both teams fighting for every pitch. Chicago managed to push across one more run in the ninth inning to extend their lead to 6-5, and Arizona could not generate enough offense in their final at-bat to tie or win the game. When the final out was recorded, the Cubs celebrated their 6-5 victory while Arizona walked off the field frustrated but still in contention. The loss dropped the Diamondbacks to 16-14 overall, while Chicago improved to 19-12 with momentum on their side. Both teams would need their pitching staffs to stay healthy throughout the season if they wanted to compete for a playoff spot in their competitive division.
