Cubs Dominate Diamondbacks in Sunday Matchup
The Arizona Diamondbacks visited the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, May 3rd, at Wrigley Field. Arizona came in struggling with four losses in a row and a 16-17 record overall. Chicago, meanwhile, was riding high with five straight wins and an impressive 22-12 mark. The Cubs were hungry for another victory after beating Arizona 2-0 just the day before. Starting pitcher Merrill Kelly took the mound for the D-backs, while Matthew Boyd started for the Cubs. Both teams wanted to prove themselves in this National League matchup. However, the Cubs controlled the game from start to finish. When the final out was recorded, Chicago had won decisively, 8-4. The Cubs' powerful offense overwhelmed Arizona's pitching staff, and their defense stayed solid throughout. Although Arizona scored twice in the second inning, they couldn't keep up with Chicago's explosive hitting. The Cubs showed resilience, mounting a comeback after falling behind early. This victory extended Chicago's winning streak and pushed them further ahead in their division race.
Early Scoring and Cubs' Third-Inning Explosion
Arizona struck first when Moreno hit a massive home run in the second inning. His bat connected with a 94 mph fastball, sending the ball soaring 427 feet over left center field. With Arenado on second base, the D-backs jumped ahead 2-0 with just two outs on the board. Arizona's offense looked dangerous early. However, Chicago answered back immediately. Kelly singled to center in the bottom of the second, scoring Busch and cutting the lead to 2-1. The Cubs weren't satisfied with one run, though. In the third inning, Ballesteros crushed a home run to left center, traveling 389 feet with Hoerner on base. That two-run shot gave Chicago a 3-2 lead they would never surrender. The momentum had shifted dramatically toward the Cubs. Chicago's hitting was becoming a real problem for Arizona's pitching staff, and the game was far from over.
Cubs Seal Victory with Late-Inning Dominance
Chicago's bats continued to punish Arizona's pitchers in the fifth inning. Busch smashed a triple to right field, and the ball rolled into scoring position at 296 feet. Three runs came across the plate immediately—Ballesteros, Bregman, and Happ all scored on that single play. The Cubs now led 6-2, and Arizona's chances of winning had faded significantly. During the seventh inning, Chicago added two more runs to put the game completely out of reach. Busch hit a sacrifice fly that scored Happ, and Kelly singled to left, bringing in Suzuki. Chicago now led 8-2 with just two innings remaining. Arizona managed to score twice more in the ninth inning when Del Castillo blasted a two-run home run, traveling 412 feet to center field with Gurriel Jr. aboard. His late home run made the final score 8-4 in favor of Chicago. The Cubs' victory improved their division position and extended their winning streak further into May.
