Arizona Strikes First in Cincinnati
The Diamondbacks rolled into Great American Ball Park looking to bounce back. Arizona had lost three straight games heading into Friday night. The Reds were struggling too, sitting at 32-35. Nick Lodolo took the mound for Cincinnati while Eduardo Rodriguez started for Arizona. The game stayed quiet through the first inning. Then Noelvi Marte stepped up in the second. Rodriguez threw an 86-mile-per-hour changeup and Marte crushed it. The ball rocketed 427 feet over center field. The Reds led 1-0. Arizona answered right back in the third. Nolan Arenado lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. Gabriel Moreno sprinted home. Tied 1-1. The early back-and-forth set the tone for an exciting night.
The Middle Innings Heat Up
The score stayed tied through the fourth and fifth innings. Both teams played solid defense and threw strikes. Then the sixth inning arrived. LuJames Groover came up for Arizona with a runner on base. Nick Lodolo wound up and delivered an 83-mile-per-hour curveball. Groover made contact and drove it to center field. Jordan Lawlar scored from second base. Arizona led 2-1. Cincinnati's bats went quiet after that. The Reds loaded the bases in the third when Eugenio Suarez singled to center. But Spencer Steer scored on a throwing error by Lawlar. Cincinnati pulled within one but couldn't push across more runs. Arizona's pitching staff settled in. Kevin Ginkel and other relievers kept the Reds off the board.
Arizona Seals the Victory Late
The ninth inning arrived with Arizona clinging to a 2-1 lead. Brock Burke took the mound for Cincinnati. Geraldo Perdomo stepped in with two outs. Burke threw an 86-mile-per-hour slider. Perdomo put the ball in play. Chaos erupted. Blake Dunn fumbled the ground ball in left field. Errors piled up. Moreno scored on the mishap. Perdomo raced to second base. Ildemaro Vargas reached third. Then Jordan Lawlar came to the plate. Burke threw another changeup. Lawlar ripped a single to right field. Vargas sprinted home. Perdomo scored too. Arizona won 5-2. The Diamondbacks improved to 35-34. Cincinnati fell to 32-36. Arizona's bullpen held strong when it mattered most. The road trip was turning around.
