Carroll's bomb strikes early for Arizona
The Diamondbacks came to Cincinnati looking to bounce back. They'd beaten the Reds 5-2 the night before and wanted to keep the momentum rolling. The Reds were struggling, sitting at 32-36 after losing two straight games. At Great American Ball Park, things started fast. In the very first inning, Corbin Carroll stepped up against Rhett Lowder. The young star got hold of a pitch and launched it deep to right center. The ball rocketed 433 feet into the night sky. Boom! Arizona led 1-0 before most fans even found their seats. Carroll's power was on full display early. This was the kind of start the Diamondbacks needed on the road.
Cincinnati ties it up, Arizona takes the lead again
The Reds couldn't stay quiet for long. In the bottom of the third inning, Cincinnati mounted their first real threat. With two outs, Edwin Arroyo stepped in against Michael Soroka. Soroka threw an 81-mile-per-hour slurve on the 4th pitch. Arroyo swung and made contact. The ball found right field. Matt McLain came racing home with the tying run. Just like that, the score was 1-1. But Arizona's bats weren't finished. The Diamondbacks' starter Soroka was locked in, striking out batters left and right. He'd eventually throw 7 innings of near-flawless baseball. Soroka gave up just two hits total and let his teammates stay in charge of this tight contest.
Reds walk off with the win in eighth inning
The game stayed tied at 1-1 heading into the eighth inning. Both teams had chances, but neither could break through. Then Cincinnati got their moment. Juan Morillo was pitching for Arizona in relief. Noelvi Marte stepped up to the plate with the Reds fighting for their season. On the third pitch, Morillo threw an 83-mile-per-hour slider. Marte was ready. He ripped it to left center and watched it fly. The ball sailed 413 feet and cleared the wall. One swing. One moment. Game over. Cincinnati 2, Arizona 1. The Reds got the win they desperately needed. Their record improved to 32-36. Arizona fell to 35-34. One swing changed everything.
