Carroll Blasts Opening Shot as Miami Answers Back
The Diamondbacks and Marlins squared off at loanDepot park in Miami on Tuesday night. Arizona came in riding a loss and fighting to stay above .500 at 34-32. Miami had won three straight and sat at 32-35, hungry for more wins. The final score tells you this game stayed wild the whole way: Miami 10, Arizona 6. But we've got to start at the beginning, where Corbin Carroll made an instant statement. On the very first batter of the game, Carroll crushed a Max Meyer fastball deep to right-center. The ball rocketed 400 feet and cleared the wall before anyone could blink. One pitch in, Arizona led 1-0. Miami didn't stay quiet long. Xavier Edwards stepped up in the bottom of the first with two outs. He ripped a single to right that scored Otto Lopez. Just like that, Miami tied it 1-1.
Two Teams Trade Blows Through the Middle Innings
The game stayed tight as both offenses started cooking. In the second inning, Connor Norby doubled to center field for Miami, and Joe Mack scored to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead. Then in the third inning, Xavier Edwards stepped up again and smacked a sacrifice fly to left. Otto Lopez crossed home plate, and Miami extended their lead to 3-1. Arizona wasn't done yet. Gabriel Moreno launched a monster shot in the fourth inning. His home run traveled 417 feet to left-center and made it 3-2. Both teams kept fighting. In the sixth, the Marlins pounded harder. Liam Hicks doubled to left, and Kyle Stowers followed with a double of his own to center. When Stowers' hit left the bat, two Marlins runners scored. Miami had jumped to 6-2 and looked like they were pulling away.
Arizona Rallies Late but Miami Holds On for Victory
Arizona wasn't finished. In the seventh inning, Ketel Marte doubled to center and Tommy Troy scored, making it 6-3. The eighth inning turned into a slugfest for the Diamondbacks. Marte singled to center, and two runners scored: Geraldo Perdomo and Ryan Waldschmidt. Troy moved to third. Corbin Carroll then grounded out, but Troy scored on the play. Suddenly Arizona had tied it 6-6. But Miami answered back immediately in their half of the eighth. Otto Lopez singled to center, and Mack scored. Then Javier Sanoja smacked a single to center that scored two more runs. Esteury Ruiz doubled to left, driving in Edwards. Miami had reclaimed the lead at 10-6. Arizona couldn't mount another comeback. Final score: Miami 10, Arizona 6. The Marlins improved to 33-35, while Arizona fell to 34-33 and lost their second straight.
