Diamondbacks Head to Miami Looking for a Bounce Back
The Arizona Diamondbacks rolled into Miami on Wednesday needing to snap a skid. They'd just lost 6-10 to the Marlins the night before in a heartbreaking eighth inning. Arizona brought a 34-32 record into loanDepot park, while the Marlins sat at 32-35 but had won three straight games. The Diamondbacks were counting on pitcher Ryne Nelson to keep them in the game. But Miami had other plans. The Marlins dominated from the first pitch, jumping all over Nelson's fastballs and sliders. By the time the dust settled, the Marlins crushed Arizona 8-0. It was a complete shutout. The Diamondbacks bats stayed silent all game long. Gabriel Moreno managed two hits and a walk, but nobody else could get anything going. This loss dropped Arizona deeper into trouble.
Miami Explodes: Caissie and Stowers Go Deep
The Marlins' bats came alive in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Otto Lopez ripped a single to center field. That brought Liam Hicks racing home with the first run. The Marlins led 1-0. Then came the fourth inning explosion. Owen Caissie stepped in and crushed Nelson's fastball into right field. It flew 370 feet over the wall. Javier Sanoja scored on the play too. The ball was gone. Then Lopez came up again and singled to center, sending Sanoja and Hicks flying around the bases. The Marlins weren't done yet. Kyle Stowers walked up and cranked a 425-foot bomb to right field. That was three runs in one at-bat. The crowd erupted. Miami was already up 7-0 and still hitting. By the fifth inning, Caissie added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly. The Marlins led 8-0. Arizona never had a chance.
Miami Closes Out the Victory on a Quiet Night
Arizona's pitchers tried to stop the bleeding. Jonathan Loaisiga came in after Nelson got pulled. He gave up one more run on Caissie's sacrifice fly. Then Drey Jameson took the mound and shut the door completely. He threw two and two-thirds innings without allowing a hit or a run. Juan Morillo got the final out. The Diamondbacks' bats never woke up. They managed just five hits total all game. Ketel Marte went zero for five with a strikeout. Tommy Troy struck out twice in four at-bats. Ryan Waldschmidt, Geraldo Perdomo, and Ildemaro Vargas all went hitless. It was a rough night from top to bottom. The final score was Miami 8, Arizona 0. The Marlins improved to 33-35 and grabbed their fourth straight win. The Diamondbacks fell to 34-33 and lost their second in a row. Arizona's pitching couldn't hold back the Marlins' hot bats.
