Arizona Blanked as Miami Strikes First
The Diamondbacks rolled into Miami looking to bounce back after losing 8-0 the night before. Arizona was hungry for a win, but the Marlins had other plans. They were riding high with five straight victories and wanted to keep the momentum rolling. The game took place at Miami's home stadium on Thursday, June 11. You could feel the energy in the air — this was a matchup between two teams fighting for playoff position. In the bottom of the first inning, the Marlins struck fast. Otto Lopez worked his way on base and raced around the diamond. Xavier Edwards stepped up and lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. The ball sailed through the air as Lopez tagged up and sprinted home. Miami jumped ahead 1-0 early. Arizona's bats stayed silent through the opening frame. The Diamondbacks had just three hits all night, with Ketel Marte and LuJames Groover managing the only solid contact.
Marsee's Hit Extends Miami's Lead in Fourth
The game stayed tight through the middle innings. Arizona's pitching staff worked hard to keep the Marlins off the board. Merrill Kelly took the mound for the Diamondbacks and threw six strong innings. He gave up only four hits and struck out one batter. But Kelly couldn't escape the fourth inning without allowing another run. With two outs on the board, Jakob Marsee stepped into the batter's box facing Kelly. The pitcher wound up and released a fastball clocking 93 miles per hour. Marsee made solid contact and drove a single to center field. Kyle Stowers scored from third base and raced across home plate. The ball hugged the grass as it found its way into center. Miami now led 2-0. That single proved to be the game's final scoring play. Both teams fought hard after that, but no more runs crossed home. The Marlins' defense locked down tight for the rest of the night.
Miami Holds On as Bullpen Shuts Down Arizona
The Diamondbacks couldn't find their rhythm at the plate. Corbin Carroll struck out twice and went hitless. Nolan Arenado struck out three times in four at-bats. Gabriel Moreno, Aramis Garcia, and Tommy Troy all came up empty. Arizona's lineup just couldn't generate the firepower they needed to climb back into the game. Miami's relief pitchers were absolutely dominant down the stretch. Pete Fairbanks locked down the save with a perfect ninth inning. Anthony Bender and Calvin Faucher also threw scoreless innings. The Marlins' pitching staff combined to hold Arizona scoreless over nine innings. When the final out was recorded, Miami had won 2-0. Arizona fell to 34-35 on the season after the loss. Miami improved to 34-35 and extended their winning streak to five games. The Diamondbacks head home disappointed, while the Marlins celebrate keeping their hot streak alive.
