Game setup, location, score, and goals
The Diamondbacks traveled to face the New York Mets at their home stadium on Thursday, April 9. Arizona wanted to use its pitching depth led by Eduardo Rodriguez to stay close, while the Mets hoped Nolan McLean and the staff would hold strong. Early in the game the Mets struck first and the scoreboard showed New York leading 1–0 after the first inning. The final score was Arizona Diamondbacks 7, New York Mets 1. This game turned into a big comeback by Arizona, and they pulled ahead later with a big seventh inning that changed the whole contest.
Early scoring and key plays in the first innings
In the first inning the Mets jumped ahead when Robert Jr. crushed a cutter and the ball sailed 412 feet over center field. That shot came with two outs and an 88 mph cutter, and it gave New York a 1–0 lead. Arizona did not score in the early innings, while both starting pitchers kept the game tight. The game's momentum stayed quiet until later because baserunners were limited and strikeouts kept rallies short. Meanwhile both teams tried small plays like bunts and steals, but no runs came until Arizona finally answered in the seventh inning with a big rally.
Seventh and eighth inning rally plus game meaning
Arizona exploded in the seventh inning with a four-run outburst that flipped the game. Moreno doubled to right and tied the score at 1–1, then Thomas hit a fielder's choice that pushed Fernandez home for a lead. After that Tawa hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3–1, and Barrosa tripled to score Thomas and extend the margin. In the eighth, Del Castillo drove in Vargas with a double, then Fernandez grounded out to score another run. Moreno then doubled to score Del Castillo and make it 7–1. As a result Arizona improved to 6–6 while the Mets fell to 7–5.
