Braves Visit Mariners in Tight Seattle Matchup
The Atlanta Braves traveled to Seattle for a midweek game against the Mariners on Wednesday, May 6. Atlanta came into the game riding momentum after winning their previous matchup 3-2 in dramatic fashion. The Braves sent Martin Perez to the mound, while Bryan Woo took the ball for Seattle. Both teams brought solid pitching staffs ready to compete. However, the Mariners proved too strong on this night, claiming a 3-1 victory at home. The game stayed close early, but Seattle pulled away with crucial hitting in the later innings. This loss snapped Atlanta's winning streak and dropped their record to 26-12. Although the Braves still maintain an excellent record, every game matters as the season progresses.
Early Game Tension and Seattle's Scoring Surge
Seattle struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Pereda scored on a double-play ground ball by Raleigh. The changeup pitch came in at eighty-three miles per hour, but Raleigh made contact, putting the ball in play at eighty-six miles per hour. That single run gave the Mariners an early advantage. Then in the sixth inning, RodrĂguez stepped up and delivered a massive blow for Seattle. His changeup turned into a soaring home run that traveled four hundred thirty-six feet to center field. The ball rocketed off his bat at one hundred ten miles per hour, putting Seattle up 2-0. These back-to-back scoring chances showed why the Mariners' lineup could be dangerous. Atlanta needed to respond quickly or face a tough deficit.
Late Drama and Mariners' Winning Finish
Atlanta finally got on the board in the eighth inning when Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. The sinker came in at ninety-four miles per hour, but Smith made solid contact at one hundred miles per hour, sending the ball three hundred seventy-six feet into center field. Yastrzemski scored from third on the play, cutting Seattle's lead to 2-1. However, Seattle answered right back in their half of the eighth. Young doubled to right field, bringing home Naylor and extending the Mariners' lead to 3-1. The slider came in at eighty-seven miles per hour, but Young's bat speed proved too much, launching the ball two hundred sixty-five feet. The Braves couldn't mount a comeback in the ninth, and Seattle secured the victory.
