Braves Visit Chilly San Francisco, Giants Strike First
The Atlanta Braves came to San Francisco riding a two-game losing streak. They'd just lost to the Giants 3-1 the night before. Now at 49-33, Atlanta hoped to bounce back in game two of the series. The Giants sat at 35-48 but had won their last two games. This matchup meant everything to San Francisco's playoff hopes. Chris Sale took the mound for Atlanta, his fastball hitting 98 miles per hour. Robbie Ray pitched for the Giants. The crowd at the stadium buzzed with energy. San Francisco's bats woke up early in the sixth inning. Rafael Devers smacked an infield single to third base. The ball skipped past Austin Riley's glove. Luis Arraez raced home on the throwing error. Heliot Ramos sprinted safely to third on another mistake. The Giants led 1-0 without hitting the ball hard.
More Chaos in the Seventh as Giants Extend Lead
The sixth inning had been messy for Atlanta. Now the seventh inning brought more trouble. Jung Hoo Lee worked another infield single to second base. Another throwing error by Ozzie Albies let Ramos score from third. Devers moved to second, and Lee slid into second base too. The Giants now led 2-0. The mistakes were piling up for the Braves. Then Luis Arraez stepped up with two outs. He connected with a pitch from Didier Fuentes. The ball sailed to right field. Drew Gilbert raced home from second base on the sacrifice fly. San Francisco pushed the lead to 3-0. Chris Sale had kept the Giants' hits down with his brilliant arm. But the errors made his job impossible. Atlanta was beating itself.
Braves Mount Ninth-Inning Comeback But Fall Short
Atlanta refused to quit. The Braves scratched and clawed their way back into the game. In the eighth inning, Michael Harris II stepped to the plate. Robbie Ray was still throwing hard on the mound. Harris II lofted a sacrifice fly to left field. Eli White sprinted home from third. The score was now 3-1. The Braves kept fighting in the ninth inning. Austin Riley came up with two outs. The pitcher was Caleb Kilian, a reliever for the Giants. Riley hit a ground ball to first base. Matt Olson raced home from third on the out. The final score was 3-2. San Francisco held on for the win. The Giants improved to 35-48 with this victory. Atlanta fell to 49-34. Two teams. One incredible battle. The Braves' comeback fell just one run short.
