Boston's Early Blast Sends Baltimore Reeling
The Orioles came into Fenway Park wanting to bounce back after losing 4-2 the night before. But Boston had other plans. The Red Sox struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Wilyer Abreu singled to left field, and Caleb Durbin raced home. The score was 0-1, and the crowd was already on their feet. Then Abreu came right back in the third inning and crushed a fastball over the wall in right field. The ball rocketed 398 feet into the night sky. Durbin scored again on that blast, and suddenly Boston was up 0-3. Chris Bassitt was struggling on the mound for Baltimore. The Red Sox smelled blood in the water and kept swinging hard.
Suarez Falls Apart in the Fifth Inning Disaster
The Orioles switched pitchers and brought in Albert Suarez to try stopping the bleeding. It did not work. In the fifth inning, Boston's bats exploded like fireworks. Mickey Gasper came up and tripled to right field, driving in both Willson Contreras and Masataka Yoshida. That made it 0-5. Then Isiah Kiner-Falefa doubled to left, scoring Gasper and pushing it to 0-6. Caleb Durbin followed with another double to left, scoring Kiner-Falefa. Now it was 0-7. Ceddanne Rafaela added an infield single that scored Durbin. The Red Sox had five runs in one inning. Suarez could not find the strike zone. Baltimore's pitching staff was completely overwhelmed by Boston's hot bats.
Rutschman's Late Rally Cannot Save Baltimore's Night
Baltimore finally got on the board in the seventh inning. Adley Rutschman, the Orioles' star catcher, stepped up to the plate against Ryan Watson. He connected on a fastball and drove it to right field. The ball sailed all the way to the wall for a triple, and Taylor Ward scored from second base. The Orioles were on the board at 1-8. It was a bright moment for Baltimore's offense, but it came too late to matter. The Red Sox had built such a big lead that one run meant nothing. Boston's pitching held firm the rest of the way. When the final out was made, the scoreboard read 8-1. The Red Sox improved to 26-34 with this win. Baltimore fell to 29-33 and would have to regroup for their next game.
