Cleveland's Big Start Changes the Game Early
The Baltimore Orioles traveled to Cleveland on Thursday, April 16, hoping to bounce back after losing to Arizona the day before. The Guardians were ready for a fight after dropping their own game to St. Louis. Shane Baz took the mound for Baltimore while Parker Messick started for Cleveland. Right from the start, things went badly for the Orioles. In the first inning, José Ramírez crushed a fastball 388 feet to right-center field, and that home run brought another run across the plate. Cleveland jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Baltimore could even record an out. The Guardians' offense was clicking early, and their pitching looked sharp. Baltimore's young lineup faced an uphill battle from that opening moment.
Guardians Add More Runs While Orioles Stay Quiet
After that explosive first inning, Cleveland kept the pressure on Baltimore throughout the middle innings. In the fifth inning, Oscar Kwan singled to right field, and that hit scored another run for the Guardians. The score was now 3-0, and the Orioles' bats remained silent. Then in the sixth inning, Yandy Valera lined a single to left that brought home José Ramírez again. Cleveland extended their lead to 4-0 with another well-hit ball. Meanwhile, Baltimore's pitchers were trying their best to keep the game close, but Cleveland's offense was too sharp. The Orioles couldn't generate any scoring opportunities early on. By the time the sixth inning ended, Cleveland had built a commanding lead that looked impossible to overcome.
Baltimore Fights Back in the Ninth But Falls Short
Baltimore's bats finally woke up in the ninth inning when the game was almost over. Gunnar Henderson hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored one run. The Orioles were down 4-1 at that point, but they weren't giving up yet. Then Salvador Alonso doubled to right, and that hit brought home another Baltimore runner. Suddenly the score was 4-2, and the Orioles had some momentum building. Still, time was running out, and Cleveland's pitchers shut the door. The final score was Cleveland 4, Baltimore 2. For the Orioles, facing injuries to key players like Adley Rutschman made winning tougher. The Guardians improved to 11-9 with the victory and showed they could compete with tough opponents.
