Angels Strike Early, Schanuel Blasts Two-Run Shot
The Orioles flew into Anaheim Stadium hoping to bounce back. They had dominated the night before, winning 6-1. But this Wednesday belonged to the Angels. Los Angeles came out swinging from pitch one. In the bottom of the first inning, Nolan Schanuel stepped up against Orioles starter Shane Baz. Baz threw a cutter at 88 miles per hour. Schanuel connected and sent the ball soaring to right center field. It traveled 382 feet before clearing the wall. Zach Neto scored on the blast. The Angels led 2-0 before Baltimore even batted. The Angels' young lineup was ready to play. Schanuel's monster shot set the tone early. Baltimore's pitching staff would struggle to slow them down all night long.
Angels Keep Rolling, Grissom Singles in Two More Runs
The Angels were not done scoring. In the fifth inning, Baz was still on the mound for Baltimore. His fastballs and cutters could not find the zone. Vaughn Grissom stepped to the plate with runners in scoring position. He slapped a single to left field. Jose Siri and Zach Neto raced home. The Angels led 4-0. One batter later, Jorge Soler came up and lofted a sacrifice fly to center field. Grissom scored easily on the play. Now it was 5-0, Angels. Baltimore could not keep up. The Orioles' pitching was falling apart. Baz had given up all five runs. The Angels' young bats were putting on a show. You could feel the game slipping away from Baltimore with every pitch.
Orioles Score Late, Fall Short as Angels Hold 5-1 Win
Baltimore finally got on the board in the seventh inning. Leody Taveras smacked a single to center field off Angels pitcher Chase Silseth. Gunnar Henderson, who had been waiting on base, raced home to score. The Orioles trailed 5-1. That was all the scoring Baltimore could muster. The Angels' pitching staff took over from there. Ryan Johnson was brilliant on the mound for Los Angeles. He threw six innings with just one hit allowed and zero runs given up. He struck out eight batters. Johnson earned the win. The final score was Angels 5, Orioles 1. Baltimore fell to 38-43. Los Angeles improved to 33-48 with the victory. The Angels bounced back after losing the first game of the series. Henderson's run kept the Orioles fighting, but it was not enough to catch the hot Angels.
