Mariners Strike Early Against Struggling Orioles
The Orioles came to Seattle looking to bounce back. They'd lost to the Mariners 3-1 the night before and needed a win badly. Baltimore's record sat at 35-40 as they took the field at T-Mobile Park. Shane Baz took the mound for the Orioles, ready to shut down Seattle's lineup. But the Mariners had other plans. In the bottom of the first inning, the bats came alive fast. Cole Young ripped a double down the left field line. Runners were moving. The ball found grass, and suddenly Naylor came racing home. Seattle was up 1-0 before the Orioles even stepped up to bat. Then Colt Emerson stepped in and delivered the knockout punch. He singled to right, and two runs scored in a flash. Young and Canzone both crossed the plate. In one inning, the Mariners had built a 3-0 lead that would hold all game.
Baz Battles Hard But Cannot Stop the Damage
Shane Baz fought back after that rough first inning. The right-hander stayed strong on the mound, mixing a 95-mph fastball with his sharp knuckle curves at 84-85 mph. Baz pitched seven full innings and gave up only five hits. He struck out nine batters and kept the Orioles close—but close wasn't enough. The Baltimore lineup just couldn't find their timing. Pete Alonso went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Gunnar Henderson struck out twice and managed only a walk. Adley Rutschman, the all-star catcher, finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as well. Taylor Ward swung and missed twice before striking out. The Orioles couldn't string together any hits when they mattered. Seattle's pitching was too sharp. Bryan Woo was equally dominant for the Mariners, spinning seven innings of three-hit baseball with zero runs allowed. Nine strikeouts for Woo. The Mariners' defense stayed clean behind him.
Seattle Closes It Out, Moves Closer to .500 Mark
The final innings brought no relief for Baltimore. The Orioles' bats remained silent through eight innings. They could not manufacture a single run. Not one. Leody Taveras scratched out a hit, and Jackson Holliday got one base knock too. Colton Cowser drew a walk and struck out once. But nothing connected when it mattered. The ninth inning arrived with the Orioles desperate. Rico Garcia came in to pitch for Baltimore, but the damage was already done. Andres Munoz came out for Seattle in the ninth and locked it down. He struck out one more batter and got the save. Final score: Mariners 3, Orioles 0. Seattle improved to 38-37 on the season and pulled closer to an even record. Baltimore fell to 35-40, their losing ways continuing in the Pacific Northwest. The Mariners' pitching staff had proven why Seattle stays dangerous when their arms are sharp.
