Ben Rice Strikes First, Boston Bounces Back
The Yankees hosted the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Boston came in riding high after winning the night before. New York sat at 37-26, looking strong at home. But the visitors wanted to steal one in enemy territory.
Ben Rice launched the first pitch he saw deep to right. The ball sailed 377 feet and crashed over the wall. The crowd roared as New York jumped ahead 1-0. But Boston's lineup was hungry. You could feel it coming from the start. Wilyer Abreu grounded out to shortstop in the third inning. Connor Wong scampered home on the play. Runners moved into scoring position. Willson Contreras stepped up next and ripped an infield single. Jarren Duran sprinted across the plate. Suddenly Boston led 2-1. The Red Sox were awake.
Monasterio's Bomb and Contreras' Slugfest
The fourth inning changed everything. Andruw Monasterio stepped into the box with one out. Ryan Weathers wound up and fired a 96-mile-per-hour fastball. Monasterio connected. The ball flew into left field like a missile, 408 feet away. Another Red Sox run. Boston now led 3-1.
Spencer Jones answered back for New York in the bottom half. He doubled down the right-field line with one out. Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored on the hit. The Yankees cut into the lead at 3-2. Then came the fifth inning fireworks. Willson Contreras stepped up again. He waited for his pitch. An 87-mile-per-hour changeup floated in. Contreras unleashed his powerful swing. The ball rocketed 419 feet into left field. Abreu scored ahead of him. Boston led 5-2. Trent Grisham answered with his own home run to right, 424 feet. Final: Red Sox 5, Yankees 3.
Gray Shines on the Mound, Red Sox Escape the Bronx
Sonny Gray was the star on the mound for Boston. The veteran pitcher threw 6.1 innings of solid baseball. He gave up eight hits and three runs, but stayed in control. Gray struck out three Yankees and walked just two. His defense helped him out. The Red Sox committed zero errors behind him. Aroldis Chapman came in for the save in the ninth. The veteran closer threw one inning and struck out one batter. Chapman walked two but didn't give up a hit. Boston held on tight. The final score: Red Sox 5, Yankees 3. This win pushed Boston to 28-35 on the season. It was their second straight victory. The Yankees fell to 37-27 at home, disappointed but still in the thick of things. Gray's arm made all the difference.
