Cubs Strike Fast Against Struggling Mets
The Chicago Cubs came into Citi Field ready to attack. The Mets were spinning their wheels—losers of two straight games with a 34-43 record. Chicago was hungry too, sitting at 40-37 after dropping their last game. This Tuesday night matchup would tell us something important about both teams. The Cubs got out their bats early. Kodai Senga took the mound for New York and immediately ran into trouble. The Cubs' lineup came ready to work counts and make Senga earn every pitch. By game's end, Chicago's bats were singing. The Cubs walked away with a 9-6 victory at the Mets' home stadium. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Dansby Swanson led the offensive charge. This win proved the Cubs had plenty of firepower waiting to explode.
Crow-Armstrong Crushes a Three-Run Bomb Early
Let's dive into the second inning, where the Cubs exploded. Carson Kelly stepped up and worked a walk off Senga, putting runners on base. Dansby Swanson followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Ian Happ. The Cubs led 2-0. Then Pete Crow-Armstrong came to the plate. Senga threw a fastball up in the zone, and Crow-Armstrong connected with serious power. The ball rocketed over the right-center field wall—a towering three-run blast that traveled 409 feet. Suddenly it was 5-0 Cubs. The Mets tried to answer back in the bottom of the second. Francisco Alvarez singled to center field, scoring two runs. But Chicago's early barrage was too much to overcome right then. Crow-Armstrong's mammoth shot had swung momentum completely toward the visitors.
Swanson Stays Hot as Cubs Hold On Late
Chicago's Dansby Swanson was unstoppable. In the fourth inning, he hammered another solo home run off Senga, traveling 380 feet. That made it 7-2 Cubs. The Mets kept fighting, though. Francisco Alvarez cranked his own solo shot in the seventh inning off Phil Maton. The score stood at 7-3. In the eighth inning, Carson Kelly doubled down the line and scored on another Swanson double. The Cubs pushed across two more runs to reach 9-3. The Mets mounted one final push in the ninth inning. Carson Benge singled, and Bo Bichette followed with a two-run home run to right-center field. New York pulled within three at 9-6, but time ran out. Chicago's bats had delivered the goods. The Cubs improved to 41-37 while the Mets fell to 34-44.
