Cubs Strike First as Manaea Struggles Early
The Cubs landed in New York fresh off a 9-6 win the night before. They were hungry for more. Shota Imanaga took the mound for Chicago while Sean Manaea pitched for the Mets at home. In the second inning, things fell apart fast for Manaea. Carson Kelly doubled down the left field line and Nico Hoerner raced home. The Mets answered back when Francisco Alvarez crushed a 92-mph fastball over the left-center wall—a 387-foot bomb that tied it up. Then A.J. Ewing stepped up and launched a 420-foot missile to right-center. The ball soared out, and Wagaman scored too. Just like that, New York led 3-1. The early fireworks had Chicago and the Mets trading haymakers before the fourth inning even arrived.
Cubs Explode in the Fourth and Sixth Innings
The fourth inning was pure chaos for the Mets. Pedro Ramirez singled to right and Hoerner scored. Then Dansby Swanson slapped a single to left—Kelly came racing home. Pete Crow-Armstrong bunted for a hit and Ramirez scored again. Suddenly the Cubs led 4-3. The Mets punched back when Mark Vientos crushed a 416-foot shot to left-center. The sixth inning belonged to Chicago. Swanson tripled to center and Ramirez sprinted home to make it 5-4. Then Matt Shaw grounded into a fielder's choice and Swanson scored the go-ahead run. Bichette homered for the Mets in the bottom half, but Chicago's bats kept roaring. The Cubs were relentless. Every time New York scored, Chicago answered harder and faster.
Cubs Seal the Victory in the Ninth Inning
The eighth inning brought more Cubs magic. An error by Mark Vientos at first base let Pedro Ramirez score and put Crow-Armstrong on base. The Cubs kept climbing. The ninth inning was the final blow. Devin Williams pitched for the Mets but couldn't stop the onslaught. Pedro Ramirez singled to right and Hoerner scored to make it 8-5. Then Dansby Swanson delivered the dagger—a single to left that scored both Kelly and Ramirez. That made it 10-5, and the game was over. The Cubs dominated from start to finish. Chicago improved to 43-37 while New York fell to 34-45. The Cubs' bats were too strong. Swanson went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Pedro Ramirez went 3-for-5 with four runs and two steals. Chicago's pitching held strong enough to close it out.
