Pirates Fall Fast as Cubs Strike Early
The Cubs rolled into Pittsburgh hungry after getting crushed 12-1 the night before. They came to PNC Park ready to bounce back, and boy did they show up. Bubba Chandler took the mound for the Pirates, but the Cubs bats came alive right away. In the first inning, Ian Happ ripped a single to center field that scored two runs immediately. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Nico Hoerner had sparked the rally. Then in the second inning, Hoerner singled to right and brought home Carson Kelly. The Cubs jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Pittsburgh could even settle in. But Brandon Lowe answered back with a massive three-run homer to right field that tied things up at 3-3. The Pirates weren't done yet either. Konnor Griffin crushed one over the wall in the fourth inning. But Chicago's bats stayed sharp and hungry.
Seventh Inning Explosion Breaks the Game Wide Open
The game stayed tight through the middle innings, but everything changed in the seventh. That's when the Cubs unleashed a power storm that buried Pittsburgh. Ian Happ stepped up and launched a towering home run to right field that soared 370 feet. Two more runs scored on that blast. Right after that, Michael Conforto came up and smashed another homer to right center field, traveling 395 feet through the night air. Suzuki scored on that one. Michael Busch followed with a single to right that scored Dansby Swanson and moved Hoerner to third base. The Cubs had erupted for six runs in one inning. Yohan Ramirez couldn't get anyone out and took the loss. The Pirates brought in Justin Lawrence, but the damage was already done. Chicago's bats had taken over completely.
Cubs Seal Victory with Dominant Finish
By the end of the seventh inning, the Cubs had a commanding 10-4 lead. The Pirates never could get back into it. Pittsburgh's bats went quiet after that seventh-inning barrage. The Cubs' pitching staff shut things down to protect the lead. Jameson Taillon had started for Chicago and gave the team solid work through five innings. Then the bullpen took over with Jacob Webb, Phil Maton, Caleb Thielbar, and Ethan Roberts all stepping in to keep Pittsburgh off the board. The Cubs defense stood strong the whole way. When the final out was recorded, Chicago had pulled off a complete turnaround after getting dominated the night before. The Cubs improved to 30-26 while Pittsburgh dropped to 29-27. Chicago's bats had completely overwhelmed the Pirates' pitching staff and showed why depth and balance matter in baseball.
