Padres Jump Ahead Early, Cubs Fight Back
The Chicago Cubs visited the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night at the Padres' home stadium. Coming into the game, Chicago had lost its last three games, including a tough shutout from the Dodgers. San Diego was looking to bounce back after losing to Arizona the day before. However, the Padres came out hot right from the start. In the bottom of the first inning, Merrill singled to right field, and Laureano raced home for the first run. Then France smashed a ground rule double that scored two more runs, giving San Diego an early 3-0 lead before the Cubs even got a chance to bat. Chicago's pitching staff, led by starter Matthew Boyd, faced immediate trouble but stayed composed moving forward.
Ballesteros Blasts Grand Slam, Cubs Take Lead
The Cubs came roaring back in the second inning when Suzuki launched a home run over left-center field. The ball soared 396 feet into the air, and suddenly Chicago was on the board with a 3-1 score. But the real fireworks came in the third inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ballesteros stepped up to the plate and crushed a slider 404 feet to right field. His grand slam gave the Cubs a stunning 5-3 lead, putting Chicago in front for the first time all night. San Diego answered back immediately with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Cubs had seized control of the game through powerful hitting and excellent timing from their hitters.
Padres Rally Late, Hold On for 9-7 Victory
San Diego refused to go away despite trailing after the third inning. The Padres clawed back with two runs in the fifth when Castellanos singled to center, scoring two runners and tying the game. Then in the seventh inning, France tripled to left field, bringing home two more runs and giving San Diego an 8-5 lead. Sheets added another home run in the eighth, stretching the Padres' advantage to 9-5. The Cubs battled back in the ninth inning, scoring two more runs as Hoerner drove in a run and a wild pitch by closer Mason Miller allowed another run to score. However, San Diego held firm, securing a dramatic 9-7 victory and improving their record while Chicago suffered another tough loss on the road.
