Giants Get Early Strike at Oracle Park
The Cubs rolled into San Francisco on Sunday after winning big the day before. They beat the Giants 5-1 on Saturday, so you could feel some energy in the visitors' dugout. But Oracle Park had other plans. Logan Webb stood on the mound for San Francisco, ready to fire. He was locked in from pitch one. The Giants struck fast in the bottom of the fifth inning. Drew Gilbert slapped a double down the left-field line, and Jung Hoo Lee raced home. Then Matt Chapman stepped up with bases loaded tension in the air. He crushed a 92-mile-per-hour sinker and launched it deep to center field. The ball rocketed over the wall. Two runs scored on that massive blast. The Cubs trailed 3-0 already, and the game was just getting started.
Webb Dominates While Giants Add to Lead
Matt Chapman's home run sparked something special in San Francisco. The Giants kept rolling. In the seventh inning, Bryce Eldridge stepped to the plate. He fought off pitch after pitch from Hoby Milner. The first two pitches were sweepers and fastballs painting the corners. Then came pitch number five—an 87-mile-per-hour four-seam fastball down the middle. Eldridge connected and singled to left field. Chapman came racing around third and scored. The Giants now led 4-0. Meanwhile, Logan Webb was absolute magic on the mound for San Francisco. He pitched eight full innings, giving up just one run on seven hits and zero walks. Webb struck out seven batters and never let the Cubs get momentum. His performance was the real story here. The Cubs looked lost at the plate most of the day.
Cubs Finally Score But Giants Finish Strong
The Cubs needed to find something—anything—to get back in this game. In the eighth inning, they finally broke through. Alex Bregman reached on an infield single to first base. Dansby Swanson raced home as the first baseman made a throwing error trying to get Bregman. The Cubs were on the board at last with a run. But San Francisco wouldn't let Chicago steal momentum. In the bottom of the eighth, Daniel Susac drove a single to right field. Casey Schmitt sprinted home from second base and scored the Giants' fifth run. That was all she wrote. Webb and the bullpen shut the door. The final score was Giants 5, Cubs 1. The Cubs dropped to 37-35 on the season after this loss. San Francisco improved to 28-44 with the dominant win.
