Cardinals Strike First in Slugfest
The Cubs arrived at Busch Stadium looking to bounce back. They'd just lost 3-0 the night before and were hungry for offense. But the Cardinals had other plans. The moment Jordan Wicks threw his first pitch, St. Louis jumped into the fight. Jordan Walker lined a single to right field that scored JJ Wetherholt. Ivan Herrera raced home too. Just like that, it was 0-2 Cardinals. A popup by Alec Burleson scored another run. The Cardinals were rolling early, building a 0-2 lead before the Cubs could even blink. St. Louis smelled blood and kept attacking. The home team's bats were alive and swinging with purpose. Chicago's pitcher Wicks struggled to find his rhythm. The Cardinals kept putting runners in scoring position and making Wicks pay for every mistake.
Cardinals Double Down in Third Inning
The Cardinals weren't done yet. In the third inning, St. Louis cranked up the pressure even more. Ethan Roberts took the mound for Chicago and faced Alec Burleson with two outs. Burleson ripped a single to left field that scored JJ Wetherholt again. The Cardinals kept manufacturing runs. Masyn Winn stepped up next and smacked a single to center field. Two runners crossed the plate. Herrera scored and Burleson scored. The board lit up. It was now 0-5 Cardinals. Chicago's bullpen was getting hammered. The Cardinals were relentless, refusing to let up. Every batter seemed to come through with a hit. Winn's single sealed it. St. Louis had built a commanding lead that looked impossible to overcome. The Cubs desperately needed a response.
Bregman's Homer Cuts Into Cardinals' Lead
The Cubs needed something to spark their offense. A spark finally came in the sixth inning. Alex Bregman stepped up to the plate and faced Hunter Dobbins. Bregman locked in on a slider and crushed it. The ball rocketed over the wall in left center field, traveling 404 feet through the air. One run scored. Cubs 1, Cardinals 5. It wasn't enough to catch St. Louis, but it gave Chicago some hope. The Cardinals' lead felt slightly less enormous now. Bregman's blast showed the Cubs still had fight left in them. But the Cardinals held on. Matthew Liberatore pitched 5 and one-third strong innings for St. Louis, giving up no earned runs. Hunter Dobbins finished the job with a save. Final score: St. Louis 5, Chicago 1. The Cardinals improved to 31-26 on the season. The Cubs fell to 32-28.
