White Sox Strike Early Behind Montgomery's Power
The White Sox rolled into Cleveland looking to bounce back after losing 3-4 the night before. They got exactly what they needed right away. In the first inning, Colson Montgomery stepped up to face Parker Messick and crushed a double down the left field line. Miguel Vargas raced home on an error, and suddenly Chicago led 1-0. Montgomery's bat was singing early. The tall shortstop looked locked in at the plate. You could see he was hunting fastballs and ready to go. This was the spark the White Sox desperately needed. They'd been losing games, and this quick strike gave them momentum. Sean Burke took the mound for Chicago and immediately showed why he's a key piece of the pitching rebuild. The young right-hander was dealing from the start, throwing hard and painting corners.
Hedges Ties It Up, Montgomery Goes Deep Again
The Guardians weren't about to roll over. In the fifth inning, Austin Hedges dug in against Burke and connected on a 97-mile-per-hour sinker. The ball exploded off his bat and sailed over the center field wall 388 feet away. Tied 1-1. The crowd in Cleveland woke up. Hedges had that smile of a guy who just crushed one perfectly. But the White Sox had an answer ready. In the eighth inning, Montgomery came back up and faced Tim Herrin. This time he launched a 94-mile-per-hour sinker into right field. The ball rocketed 402 feet—gone. Chicago led 2-1 now. You could feel the shift in momentum. Montgomery was absolutely refusing to let his team lose. Two big swings. Two different pitchers. One incredible showing of power that kept the White Sox ahead.
White Sox Close It Out, Extend Winning Chance
The ninth inning arrived with Chicago hanging on to a 2-1 lead. Miguel Vargas stepped up against Matt Festa with one out and Tristan Peters on base. Vargas didn't need anything flashy. He lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. Peters tagged up and sprinted home. That made it 3-1 White Sox. Game over. Cleveland couldn't mount a comeback. Sean Burke pitched six strong innings with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Brandon Eisert and Grant Taylor shut the door in relief. The White Sox walked out of Cleveland with a win, improving their record to 45-43. They'd answered back after a heartbreaking extra-inning loss the night before. Montgomery went 2-for-5 with two home runs and two RBIs—the hero. Sometimes all a team needs is one player catching fire and dragging everybody forward.
