White Sox Strike Early: Four Runs in First Inning
The Chicago White Sox came to Philadelphia ready for a fight. After losing 6-8 the night before, they were hungry to bounce back. The Phillies were at home in Citizens Bank Park, but the White Sox had other plans. Andrew Painter took the mound for Philadelphia, and the White Sox lineup jumped all over him right away. Andrew Benintendi singled to left field, scoring Sam Antonacci from second base to make it 1-0. Then Chase Meidroth grounded out, but Miguel Vargas scored on the play—it was 2-0. Jacob Gonzalez grounded out next, and Benintendi came home. Tristan Peters doubled to right, bringing Montgomery across the plate. Just like that, the White Sox were up 4-0 before the Phillies even stepped up to bat. The first inning was a complete takeover.
Montgomery and Gonzalez Go Yard: 6-0 Becomes Final
Two innings later, the White Sox put this game completely out of reach. Colson Montgomery stepped up in the third inning and connected on a 95 mile-per-hour fastball from Painter. The ball rocketed over the right field wall—it was a two-run blast that made it 5-0. Then Jacob Gonzalez came right up and launched his own home run to right field. That shot traveled 428 feet and sailed over the wall like a rocket. The score jumped to 6-0, and you could feel the air going out of Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies finally got on the board in the fourth when Alec Bohm smashed a solo homer to left, making it 6-1. But those were the only runs Philadelphia could muster all day.
Marsh and Garcia Rally Late But White Sox Hold Strong
The Phillies kept fighting in the sixth inning. Brandon Marsh crushed a home run to right center field—it was a beautiful swing that traveled 389 feet. That made it 6-2, and the Phillies had some life. Then Adolis Garcia singled to right, and J.T. Realmuto scored from third to make it 6-3. But that was all the Phillies could get. The White Sox bullpen took over from there. Sean Burke pitched strong for four and one-third innings, striking out batters left and right. Sean Newcomb came in and threw two and one-third perfect innings with three strikeouts. Grant Taylor closed it out with a clean ninth inning, striking out three straight batters. Final score: White Sox 6, Phillies 3. Chicago improved to 35-30 while Philadelphia fell to 34-31. The White Sox walked out of Citizens Bank Park with a huge win.
