Philadelphia Fights Back Against Chicago's Early Burst
The White Sox came to Citizens Bank Park ready to punch. After beating the Phillies 6-3 the night before, Chicago smelled blood. The Phillies needed to bounce back fast. Tyler Gilbert took the mound for Chicago as the sun climbed higher. In the bottom of the first inning, Bryce Harper stepped up with hunger in his eyes. He drove a double to right field and Trea Turner raced home. The Phillies were alive 1-0. Then came the White Sox reply. Drew Romo lifted a sacrifice fly to center, and Jacob Gonzalez scored from third. The game was tied at 1-1. Sam Antonacci singled to right and Tristan Peters crossed the plate. Chicago led 2-1 after just two innings. The Phillies' bats were cold, but their pitcher Aaron Nola was throwing heat. Both teams felt the tension building.
Marchan's Blast and the Middle-Inning Battle
Rafael Marchan stepped into the batter's box in the bottom of the second. David Sandlin wound up and fired a 96 mile-per-hour fastball. Marchan was waiting. He crushed it over the wall to right-center field. The ball rocketed 376 feet into the Philadelphia sky. Crawford scored with him. Just like that, the Phillies grabbed a 3-2 lead. But Chicago had teeth. In the third inning, Tristan Peters doubled to left and Meidroth scored. Things stayed tight at 3-3. Brandon Marsh stepped up next for the Phillies and launched a missile to left-center. It soared 383 feet and landed in the seats. The Phillies led 4-3. The early game belonged to Philadelphia. These two teams were slugging it out, and neither wanted to blink first.
The Phillies Pile On Late to Seal Victory
The White Sox kept fighting. In the fifth inning, Randal Grichuk singled to center and both Benintendi and Montgomery scored. Suddenly it was 5-4 Chicago. But Philadelphia was not done. Alec Bohm doubled to right and Harper crossed the plate. Marsh moved to third. Bryson Stott singled to center and Marsh raced home. It was 5-6 Phillies. The bats were flying everywhere. Justin Crawford grounded into a double play but Bohm still scored. The score climbed to 5-7. In the sixth inning, Marsh singled again and Schwarber scored. Bohm followed with another single and Harper scored. Philadelphia stretched the lead to 5-9. The Phillies' defense held tight. They won 9-5. Chicago dropped to 34-32. Philadelphia improved to 35-31.
