White Sox Strike First Against Wounded Guardians
The Guardians rolled into Chicago without Jose Ramirez, their star third baseman sidelined by a hand injury. Cleveland came in 41-37, looking to bounce back after a tough loss the night before. The White Sox sat at 39-37 and were hungry to snap a three-game losing streak at home. This was their fight to win in front of the home crowd at the South Side. Right from the start, Chicago's bats woke up. In the second inning, Braden Montgomery crushed a double to left field off Cleveland starter Gavin Williams. The ball zipped past the outfielders and Tristan Peters raced home with the first run of the game. One batter later, Andrew Benintendi slapped a single, and Sam Antonacci scored easily. The White Sox already led 2-0 before Cleveland could even blink. The Guardians' pitching staff was sharp, but Chicago's young lineup was sharper.
Guardians Fight Back but Fall Short Late
Cleveland refused to quit. In the sixth inning, relief pitcher Tim Herrin gave up a solo home run to Randal Grichuk. The ball sailed over the left field wall and the White Sox extended their lead to 3-0. But then the Guardians exploded in the seventh. Grant Taylor took the mound for Chicago and couldn't find the zone. Kahlil Watson ripped a single to right, and both Steven Kwan and Daniel Schneemann sprinted home. Two runs scored on one hit. Then Rhys Hoskins singled to center, bringing Bazzana across the plate. Just like that, Cleveland had tied it 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Shawn Armstrong gave up a single to Sam Antonacci, and Braden Montgomery scored to put Chicago back on top 4-3. The momentum kept shifting back and forth like a seesaw.
Chicago Wins on Late Single in Ninth
The ninth inning brought the drama. Patrick Bailey smacked a single to right for Cleveland, and Travis Bazzana came racing home to tie the game at 4-4. Then Kyle Manzardo flew out to center, and Bailey scored on the sacrifice. Cleveland took a 5-4 lead. But Chicago had one more strike left. With two outs in the ninth, Sam Antonacci stepped up and ripped a single to center. The ball found grass and Braden Montgomery sprinted home. Then Peters flew across the plate too. Chicago won 6-5 with runners still on base. The White Sox improved to 39-37 and snapped their losing streak. Cleveland dropped to 41-38 despite fighting back hard. It was a tight, back-and-forth battle where one swing changed everything. Chicago's young lineup proved it could win close games.
